Department Profile:

The Advanced Composites Institute (ACI) has been established at Mississippi State University to bring together expertise from across the university in advanced composite material design, testing, integration, and utilization. The ACI is housed at the Raspet Flight Research Laboratory (RFRL), which was established by Dr. August Raspet in 1948 and has been in continuous operation since its founding. Over seven decades of continuous operation, RFRL has pioneered dozens of aviation “firsts,” particularly in the use of advance composite materials in aviation and aerospace applications. More recently, MSU and Raspet have quickly grown to the nation’s leading UAS RDT&E institution, leading key national efforts such as the FAA’s UAS Center of Excellence, the Department of Homeland Security’s UAS Demonstration Range Facility, and a host of industry-sponsored UAS research and development contracts and projects. ACI enhances this capability by bringing cutting-edge aerospace composite design and fabrication technologies to unmanned aircraft systems of all sizes and capabilities.
