The Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS) at Mississippi State University is an interdisciplinary center comprised of research, engineering design & development, and technology transfer teams for industry and government partners. Our overall effort is focused on developing superior computational, engineering, manufacturing, design, and information technologies relevant to Mississippi and regional industries. This is accomplished by bringing to bear world-class technologist and technologies to solve complex problems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The research is about an automatic and model based Intrusion Detection and Response System, following the Monitor, Analyze, Plan, Execute, Knowledge (MAPE-K) framework for autonomic systems. The main objective of this project is the realization of a model-based and automatically deployable protection system that operates (i) as a Security Information and Event Management (providing therefore detection capabilities and correlation functionalities on the streams of events produced by Intrusion Detection Systems, System and Application Logs, AntiVirus, ...) and (ii) as an automated decision maker for planning the optimal defense strategy to apply on the system once a threat is detected. In order to execute concrete defense operations on the system we plan to leverage, among the others, state-of-the-art technologies such as Software Defined Networks and Network Function Virtualization.The project will span several areas of research including, among the others: cyber-security, software and systems (meta)modeling and engineering, machine learning and reinforcement learning, big data, game theory, software defined networks, high performance and cloud computing.
The applicant must hold a BS in Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering. The applicant must also possess excellent communication skills. The candidate will be working on U.S. Export/ITAR controlled projects and must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. Legal Permanent Resident or eligible for an export/ITAR license or exemption (Candidate cannot be a national of an ITAR 126.1 listed country). Level of appointment (Research I,II,III, or Senor) is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Research Engineer I - B.S. in engineering, computer science or computer engineering; Less than one year in a related area.
Research Engineer II - B.S. in engineering, computer science or computer engineering; Two years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
Research Engineer III - B.S. in engineering, computer science or computer engineering; Four years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
Senior Research Engineer - B.S. in engineering, computer science or computer engineering; Six years or more years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
Familiarity with Model Integrated Computing
Demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of large networked and security systems.
Knowledge of Scala programming language
Familiarity with industrial IDSs and Firewalls, e.g., Snort, pfSense, OSSIM
Knowledge of Software Defined Network and Network Function Virtualization
Familiarity with common hypervisors (e.g., KVM, VMWare) and with common Infrastructure as a Service management products (e.g., OpenStack)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Strong communication and writing skills.
2. Ability to do independently organize the work and to produce deliverables according to the provided deadlines and to work collaboratively with other team members.
3. Strong experience in in software design, coding, testing, debugging, and maintenance
4. Application development using Java
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
Routine deadlines, usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressure from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically, ability to distinguish colors.
