Department Profile:

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology & Plant Pathology is a comprehensive department with an academic, research and service mission. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the College of Agriculture and Life Science, and currently advises approximately 330 undergraduates and 60 graduate students.

Area of Specialization:

Plant Pathology

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Collect environmental samples (Plant, soils etc.)
2. Isolate microbial organisms
3. Identify the organisms
4. Conduct genetic and metabolic analyses of bacteria
5. Set up greenhouse trials related to plant diseases and maintain a greenhouse
6. Maintain the research laboratories
7. Supervise student workers conducting plant pathology research activities
8. Practice good safety control protocols
9. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor degree in plant pathology, microbiology, biology or agronomy with
demonstrated competence in this field

Preferred Qualifications:

Research experiences in microbiology

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. General knowledge of plant growth
2. Familiar with microbiology techniques, such as sterile operation, medium preparation, microbial isolation
3. Familiar with general procedures of DNA extraction, PCR analysis and microbial identification
4. Excellent computer skills such as spreadsheets and word processing
5. Excellent interpersonal communications, organizational and problem-solving skills
6. Ability to prioritize competing demands and meet deadlines
7. Ability to work as a team member
8. Ability to anticipate barriers to project completion, plan and manage contingencies

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. Required to work in a Biosafety level-2 research laboratory
2. Requires limited lifting (bags of soil)
3. Required to work in greenhouse during the summer
4. Occasionally drive to fields
5. Exposed to outdoor conditions
6. Frequent, external imposed deadlines
