This position is a 12 month, non-tenure track, 100% research appointment with Mississippi State University located at the National Warmwater Aquaculture Center (NWAC)/Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) in Stoneville, MS with an academic affiliation with the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University. The incumbent will pursue an innovative and comprehensive program in catfish nutrition focused on evaluating and optimizing cost-effective feeds using traditional and alternative feed ingredients and nutrient supplements and developing optimum feeding strategies considering both scientific merit and practical needs of catfish producers in Mississippi and other parts of the southeastern United States. The primary function of this position will be to develop, coordinate, and implement research programs pertaining to catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding strategies in the Mississippi Delta. The incumbent will work as part of a multidisciplinary team involved in catfish production at the center.
The incumbent will be expected to develop and maintain close working relationships with catfish producers, feed mills, and processing plants, and the various aspects related to the catfish industry including governmental agencies, stakeholders, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES), Extension Service, Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture and others. This interaction ensures that the catfish nutrition research program is focused on the most pressing needs of stakeholders. The incumbent should have the knowledge and experience in fish nutrient requirements, feed formulation, feeding practices, and aquaculture production and demonstrated excellence in research, extramural grant writing, and publication.

The Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) serves as Mississippi State University's Research and Extension arm for the Delta region of Mississippi. The Delta is an alluvial floodplain that encompasses an 18 county area in northwest Mississippi. The Delta is an area of intense agricultural production.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be expected to conduct in-depth research as related to catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding strategies in the Mississippi Delta. In development of the research program, he/she will work with catfish producers, feed mills, and processing plants to promote the Mississippi and US catfish industry and identify techniques to overcome production problems that limit yields and/or profitability in catfish farms. In keeping with the team approach, cooperation in research projects is expected involving other MSU and USDA-ARS scientists at the NWAC. The incumbent will be responsible for information transfer to stakeholders of research-based production and management recommendations via use of appropriate technology. The incumbent will submit and/or partner with colleagues in grant and contract proposals seeking funding to support applied research efforts. Furthermore, this incumbent will demonstrate and present information and updates through effective program delivery by planning and participating in local, statewide, regional, and national meetings with clientele.
The incumbent should have a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research findings and troubleshoot problems with catfish industry and extension personnel. The incumbent will also be expected to publish research findings in appropriate industry and professional journals, and make presentations at industry and professional meetings. The incumbent will be encouraged to participate in graduate student training in off-campus and campus-based graduate programs in aquaculture. He/she will also be expected to actively participate in professional societies/organizations as well as appropriate DREC and MSU committees. This position will be expected to work closely with Extension to facilitate deliverable to stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in fish nutrition or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning. Acceptable candidate must have outstanding English verbal and written communication skills, experience with fish nutrition and aquaculture production, statistics, and experimental design. Experience in grant writing and pursuit of extramural funding are required.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong experience in practical fish nutrition, feed development, feeding strategies, and general aquaculture production, and demonstrated excellence or potential in research, extramural grant, and publication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Applicant must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and leadership skills are also important.
