The function of this job is to perform professional work in the fields of ornamental horticulture and arboriculture.

Salary Grade:  15

Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges.  For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provides professional advice on the selection, ordering, planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs and ground covers on campus.
2. Plans, designs, and assists in planting annual and perennial flower beds.
3. Supervises and handles the operation of the Departmental Greenhouse.
4. Grows potted plants and nursery stock and maintains records on the growing operations.
5. Trains and supervises subordinate and other personnel in greenhouse operations and in the proper methods and techniques of planting ornamental plants.
6. Horticulture license/certification required and certified arborist is preferred. Trains ground personnel in the techniques of pruning, wound dressing, cavity repair, and the cabling and bracing and all maintenance practices of trees and plant materials.
7. Prepares orders for various types of plants and seeds.
8. Inventories, maps and labels trees and shrubs on campus for instructional and maintenance purposes.
9. Assists in the preparation of maintenance programs for the control of plant diseases and insects.
10. Prepares and administers fertilizer programs for various types of plants.
11. Confers with upper administration, landscape architects, and other personnel in the selection of plants.
12. Spraying of ornamentals, trees, and turf for weeds, insects, etc.
13. Performs related duties as required.

Full supervisory responsibility for other employees is a major responsibility and includes training, evaluating, and making or recommending pay, promotion, or other employment decisions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or related field. .
Experience: (5 yrs) Five year progressive experience in Horticulture or related field.

Substitutions: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Pesticide Certification.
Certified Arborist.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Thorough knowledge of ornamental horticulture in all phases.
2. Thorough knowledge of plant propagation and procedures.
3. Considerable knowledge of the principles of nursery management.
4. Knowledge of the principles of supervision.
5. Knowledge of the elementary principles of landscaping.
6. Ability to work and supervise the work of others.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc.
Occasional-Routine deadlines; usually adequate lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; travel or other inconveniences have advance notice; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
