Laboratory Technician who will, in the field and lab settings, prepare and deploy insect traps for a invasive and native ant surveys and assist with sample and specimen preparation for museum and genetic studies, and perform miscellaneous administrative duties. The Technician will also assist student workers with lab activities.

Salary Grade:  09

Department Profile:

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology & Plant Pathology is a comprehensive department with an academic, research and service mission. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the College of Agriculture and Life Science, and currently advises approximately 330 undergraduates and 60 graduate students.

Area of Specialization:

Insect Specimen Collection

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1 Prepares and deploys insect traps of various types for placement in the field.
2 Prepares insect specimens for museum storage.
3 Maintains a high degree of organization as it pertains to categorizing specimens and inputting their data.
4 Prepares specimens for genetic analysis.
5 Practices good safety control methods.
6 Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school education and experience with laboratory work required Computer proficiency; excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent record keeping skills and a valid driver's license required. Must be able to work with other members of the laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to follow routine verbal or written instructions.
2. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
3. Skill in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment.
4. Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
5. Knowledge of experimental procedures, protocols, and preparation techniques within area of specialty.
6. Ability to set up, calibrate, operate, and maintain standard laboratory and test equipment.
7. Knowledge of the cleaning specifications of various laboratory and/or medical equipment, fixtures, utensils, and related materials.
8. Computer proficiency

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1 Requires limited lifting of files, records, and insect drawers.
2 Fieldwork requires ability to drive and includes exposure to the outdoors and associated unpredictable weather.
3 Frequent, external imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position.
4 Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
5 Travel throughout Mississippi to various events and field sites may be necessary with some overnight stays required on occasion.
