The Director of the School will also hold the James T. White Chair in Civil & Environmental Engineering. The successful candidate must possess earned baccalaureate and doctoral degrees in civil engineering or a closely related field, have significant teaching experience, have earned at least national recognition through a distinguished record of accomplishments in civil engineering education and research, and qualify for the rank of professor. We seek a dynamic problem solver who is collegial and forward-thinking and will synergize the efforts of the faculty members for the greater good of the School. The candidate is expected to have a vision and strategic plan along with measurable goals for the School and to advance its reputation and competitiveness at regional and national levels. Requirements include (1) a significant track record of funded research at the nationally competitive level, (2) successful leadership of government and industry-funded research grants and contracts, and (3) scholarly publications. Preferences include (1) prior successful leadership and administrative experience as a department head or school or center director, and (2) a history of working with multidisciplinary teams within civil engineering and/or between disciplines as well as direct interaction with industry, and (3) a professional engineering license.

Department Profile:

The Rula School of Civil & Environmental Engineering is one of eight academic departments in the Bagley College of Engineering. The School offers an ABET-accredited undergraduate program in civil engineering with an optional concentration in environmental engineering, as well as graduate programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The School is composed of a highly diverse group of about 500 undergraduates, 100 graduate students, 10 tenure-track faculty members, 1 clinical faculty member, 2 instructors, and 4 staff members. Faculty members have developed strong teaching and research programs in all seven major areas of civil engineering: environmental engineering, construction management and materials engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering. These faculty members play a vital role in several college and university research centers (see the website at http://www.cee.msstate.edu). Examples of major collaborating units are MSU’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS, https://www.cavs.msstate.edu/), National Strategic Planning and Analysis Research Center (NSPARC, https://www.nsparc.msstate.edu/), Raspet Flight Research Laboratory (RFRL, https://www.raspet.msstate.edu/), and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC. https://www.erdc.usace.army.mil/) in Vicksburg, MS. The School is located in the newly constructed 70,000-square-foot Richard A. Rula Engineering and Science Complex, which has excellent and ample classroom and laboratory facilities including active learning technology classrooms. The School is home to several student chapters of organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Chi Epsilon Honor Society (XE), Association of General Contractors (GC), Institute of Transportation Engineering (ITE), Concrete Canoe Team, Women’s Advisory Council, Engineers Without Borders (EWB), Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS), and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides vision and leadership for nationally recognized education and research programs.
2. Provides leadership and mentoring to all faculty, staff, and students.
3. Responsible for overall administration of faculty and support staff activities.
4. Responsible for recruitment of a diverse community of students, faculty, and support staff.
5. Maintains and participates actively in ongoing departmental research program and seeks new areas of research funding.
6. Conducts research leading to scholarly publications.
7. Participates in fundraising activities, including solicitation of gifts for scholarships, professorships, chairs, etc.
8. Works with the Dean of the Bagley College of Engineering and university administration in establishing goals and objectives for the college, department, and in meeting the university missions of teaching, research, and service.
9. Serves as a liaison with faculty, administrators, alumni, students, and community.
10. Academic responsibilities include planning, reviewing, and updating the curriculum, academic programs, and course content.
11. Personnel responsibilities include promotion and tenure, performance evaluation, and workload management.
12. Fiscal responsibilities include preparing and overseeing departmental budget and other budgets for research funding.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a Ph.D. in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related field. Must have earned national recognition by a distinguished record of accomplishments in civil engineering education and research, including evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, a scholarly record of publications in archival literature, external funding, and conference presentations is required. Demonstrated administrative experience is desired. Must qualify for the rank of professor.
