Department Profile:

The Department offers a BA in Foreign Languages in Classics, French, German, and Spanish; an International Business Program (a joint BA in Foreign Languages and Business Administration); an MA in Foreign Languages, with study concentrations in French, German, and Spanish. Other languages offered are Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and Russian. The Department has several study abroad program options for students. Faculty have affiliations with the Shackouls Honors College, the Humanities Institute, the Cobb Institute and Gender Studies. The department has 15 tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as many dedicated instructors and lecturers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching four courses per semester, primarily Spanish 1-4.
  • Collaborating with the basic language coordinator and other Spanish colleagues regarding curriculum development.
  • Participating in departmental duties to promote Spanish undergraduate and graduate programs; organizing Spanish cultural activities, language clubs, and participating in departmental committees as needed.
  • Advising undergraduate and/or graduate learners in the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

M.A. in Spanish from an accredited institution and native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.

ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):


Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of three years experience teaching at the college level including both in-person and online language classes;

Application of ACTFL World Readiness Standards in classroom practices;

Proficiency-oriented pedagogy including using Spanish to teach language comprehensibly to beginning and intermediate learners;

Experience interacting with rural language learners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of Spanish language and at least some regional dialects. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish. Knowledge of the communicative approach to language teaching and ability to implement that approach. Some knowledge of Spanish literature and very strong organizational skills.
