The Mississippi State University Libraries seeks candidates for an Assistant/Associate Professor, tenure track position to serve as the Data Services Specialist and to lead the libraries’ new Data Services unit. This is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position, with rank dependent upon qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be an innovative, user-focused librarian or data scientist who will contribute to the development of the unit’s mission and strategic plan. The data services unit is a part of the Scholarly Communication Services department and reports to the Scholarly Communication Coordinator. The position requires knowledge of data literacy, including data software, data analysis, data management plans, data visualization, open data requirements, data ethics, data procurement, etc. The successful candidate will provide services to all campus constituents from undergraduates to faculty and institutional partners and will need to be well versed in academic data research lifecycles. This position will be responsible for instruction across all fields of data literacy, with a focus on data software, data visualization, and data management planning. This person will provide campus outreach to raise awareness of the libraries’ data resources and services and contribute to a campus-wide network of data professionals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead the development of a robust data services program in the University Libraries including the development and implementation of polices for data collection, distribution, curation, stewardship, and preservation
• Prepare and present internal and external data services workshops (software, visualization, data management plans, open data requirements, data ethics, data security, data literacy, etc.)
• Provide expertise in data procurement and licensing, open data best practices and policies, support data intensive courses across all disciplines and assist researchers with developing and implementing data management plans that meet funding agency requirements
• Provide consultations for data software and data visualization, and the development and implementation of data management plans
• Promote scholarly data resources to support curricular and research needs across all disciplines
• Collaborate with the Office of Research and Economic Development about campus data initiatives
• Meet library and university requirements for promotion and tenure in the areas of teaching, research, and service

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or advanced degree in a data intensive discipline
• At least one year of professional data services experience
• Experience with data visualization tools, such as Tableau
• Experience with at least one of the following data analysis tools: SPSS, SAS, STATA, Nvivo, R/RStudio

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in data intensive discipline

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Demonstrated understanding of the research processes and methods used in a range of disciplines, with particular focus on the data research lifecycle, as well as best practices and standards for data sharing and reuse (e.g., FAIR data principles).
• Experience with data visualization tools, such as Tableau
• Experience with data mining and data mining tools
• Experience with at least one of the following data analysis tools: SPSS, SAS, STATA, Nvivo, R/RStudio,
• Experience working with large data sets using tools such as OpenRefine
• Experience working with quantitative and/or qualitative data and/or digital humanities data
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills
• Familiarity with programming or scripting language such as R, Python, or JavaScript
• Familiarity with applicable data and metadata standards, and open-access repositories
• Maintain awareness of national and international developments in the research data landscape, including policies, repositories, tools, and best practices
• Ability to stay abreast of trends and best practices in academic library data services
• Ability to set and adjust priorities and work flows in a dynamic and changing environment and accept new challenges in order to realize departmental and library goals
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team and willing to be flexible to complete other duties as assigned
• Ability to carry out professional research and service necessary to meet library and university requirements for promotion and tenure.
• Professional collegiality and interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral
