Mississippi State University’s National Strategic Planning and Analysis Research Center (NSPARC) is looking for a highly motivated and self-driven candidate with a strong applied social science background for the non-tenure track position of Assistant Research Professor.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a research program in the fields of criminology, criminal justice, and corrections and identifying and securing extramural funding to establish, support, and sustain this program. The successful candidate will also actively participate as part of a multidisciplinary team to conduct research and execute tasks as specified in active NSPARC projects. The candidate is expected to work closely with faculty, researchers, and professionals at NSPARC and develop working relationships with faculty from other departments on campus and nationwide.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop an applied, multi-state research program addressing fundamentally important areas in the fields of criminology, criminal justice, and corrections.
• Identify and secure external funding to establish, support, and sustain the research program, and produce scholarly output including reports, research briefs, papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at professional meetings.
• Actively participate in NSPARC projects, including developing the overall methodology for projects, recommending statistical methods, and producing reports, research briefs, and papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
• Work individually and as part of a multidisciplinary team to write and submit competitive grant proposals in NSPARC core research areas, including workforce, economic development, education, health, and safety.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in a social science discipline
• Demonstrated successful performance in research, grant writing, and publishing in a university environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced training in social science research methodology and statistics, especially as applied in
• data-intensive fields such as demography.
• Experience with statistical packages such as SAS or STATA.
• Evidence of academic engagement, through publishing in peer reviewed journals, presenting at
• conferences, and/or submitting grant proposals for extramural funding.
• An interest in conducting applied research.
• Excellent problem-solving skills.
• Experience on extramural research projects.
• Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
• Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
• Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
