The Northern Gulf Institute at Mississippi State University, is hiring a Project Manager to lead the project “HPC-powered Bioinformatics to Unlock the Potential of NOAA ’Omics Data”. This position is based at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida. The incumbent will have the opportunity to develop wide-ranging bioinformatics operations on multiple high-performance computing platforms, including analysis of both global and Gulf/Florida datasets, using hundreds of processors, high-memory nodes, and GPUs for machine learning applications. The project manager will work with AOML researchers to design, analyze, and publish their bioinformatics/omics studies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Set up bioinformatics computing environments on NGI's Orion supercomputer, AOML's on-premise cloud cluster, and NOAA's Parallel Works cloud server (AWS, GCP);
• Develop standardized analysis workflows on Orion and other HPC environments to streamline data analysis and significantly decrease the time from sampling to data dissemination;
• Assist NOAA researchers with the analysis of their ’omics datasets, using the Orion platform and the aforementioned workflows;
• Develop training materials and tutorials to increase workforce competency and further accelerate the pace of analysis and discovery.

Supervisory Responsibility
• Supervise or co-supervise researchers or students working at AOML; roles may include instruction of bioinformatics and computing skills, guiding analysis of 'omics data, and supervising the preparation of results for publication.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree- Marine Science, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Systems Biology or related field

2-3 years related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. strongly preferred in marine science, bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, microbiology, systems biology, or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Bioinformatics experience, including DNA sequence analysis, data science programming (e.g., Python, R), the Unix command line, computational workflows, and statistics;
• A strong publication record; and
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Optionally, if incumbent wishes to participate in field work on ocean-going research vessels, should have the ability to navigate stairs and lift objects up to 50 pounds.
