Position Function:

Poultry Science Research Program Manager, with responsibility for the commercial-scale broiler farm, as well as poultry research farm facilities.
• Provide day-to-day technical/professional guidance and leadership as appropriate to the research programs that are both varied and extensive, ranging from applied nutrition to basic reproductive physiology.
• Serve as principal point of contact, representation, and liaison with external constituencies on operational matters; coordinate feed milling at the USDA poultry research unit and processing USDA birds at the MSU processing plant.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, university, and funding agency regulations.
• Vet all research and teaching protocols.
• Establish cost recovery funding scales for proposals to industry and agency funding sources.
• Oversee maintenance of all farm facilities, equipment, vehicles, and grounds.

The Department of Poultry Science at Mississippi State University is one of six poultry science degree granting departments remaining in the United States. Our research programs and teaching curriculum mirror current industry practices. As such, we have a large percentage of graduates that work in the industry and allied industry (62% as a current average). However, all graduates have opportunities for employment in the poultry industry. The department supports Mississippi's largest commodity, which has provided 100% placement of our graduates since the first Poultry Science degree was awarded in 1948. A very high percentage of our pre-vet students are accepted into vet school. A baccalaureate degree in Poultry Science is an excellent start to a career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The position oversees fiscal, operational, administrative, infrastructure, and human resources management of the farm, including the farm manager, research technician, and two agricultural technicians, and numerous student workers.
• Work with farm manager and faculty to assign daily/weekly/long-term duties
• Use resources effectively to meet the teaching, research and Extension needs
• Develop and implement a training program for new employees
• Support and enhance extramural funding sources (USDA grants, SMOAs, GMOAs, etc.), coordinate workshop activities on the PRC in conjunction with faculty in the department
• Initiate negotiations with hatcheries and feed ingredient suppliers to procure hatching eggs, chicks, and ingredients at cost or donated
• Attend industry meetings as needed to support needs of department
• Respond to emergencies after hours and holidays, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Poultry Science or a closely related field. 

Experience: Two (2) years relevant experience to duties described above. 

Substitution: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Poultry industry experience (2 yrs or more) and/or Master of Science in Poultry Science or a closely related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, students, and industry; manage employees, research projects, budgets, and poultry facilities (including hatchery, feed mill, live production, processing).
• Creatively evaluate, delegate, and resolve issues related to poultry/research operations as they occur in a proactive and fiscally responsible manner.
• Proficient use of computer and related software and smart devices to communicate, document, and facilitate operations.
• Working knowledge of poultry environmental controls

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Location of the position is a poultry farm with multiple houses. Physical effort is required, including ability to repeatedly lift and carry at least 50 pounds, as well as being able to stand and sit for extended periods of time. Environment conditions in facilities often expose individual to dust, organic matter, loud noises, poultry dander. Occasional handling of pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides, cleaning chemicals, etc. Environment is often dusty and dirty. Temperatures fluctuate widely, depending on the season.
