Post-Doctoral Associates at the Institute for Clean Energy Technology (ICET) hold full-time non-tenure track positions to assist in the conduct of research and development of tasks relating to an externally funded program. The Post-Doctoral Associate, an externally-funded professional, reports to a project investigator. These positions are contingent on the availability of funding.

Salary Grade:  UC

Department Profile:

The Institute for Clean Energy Technology (ICET) at Mississippi State University is an interdisciplinary center comprised of research, and engineering design and development for industry and government partners. Our overall effort is focused on evaluation of materials and components of vital safety systems used throughout the nuclear complex.

Area of Specialization:

Advanced Aerosol Measurement Techniques and Air Filtration Analysis, including but not limited to In-flight Particle Size and Shape Analysis, Particle Generations, Air Filter Tests, and Test Stand Development and Enhancement

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The individual filling this position will be involved in nuclear ventilation research efforts.
The successful candidate will be expected to rapidly assimilate requirements and procedures set forth in approved filter test plans and to take the leadership role in data reduction, drafting of reports and manuscripts, and making presentations summarizing filter testing activities. Responsibilities will include the following:
• Contribute to the design and development of test infrastructure for qualification of nuclear-grade air filters
• Operating and maintaining aerosol measurement instruments, such as Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) Spectrometers, Laser Aerosol Spectrometer (LAS), Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS), etc.
• Collecting filter testing data
• Reducing test data and authoring reports of results to customers
• Developing presentations for customers and for presentation at professional meetings
• Authoring papers for submission to peer reviewed journals
Limited travel will be required

Minimum Qualifications:

A PhD in a field related to Aerosol Science, or Aerospace, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

A PhD in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is preferred along with experience in air filtration and aerosol measurement techniques

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The person must have good experimental and theoretical skills. Research experience in air filtration, aerosol measurement techniques, and the area of uncertainty analysis for complex systems is highly desired.

Preferred skills include the operation and maintenance of advanced instrumentation, ideally based on past experience in operating and evaluating instrument performance in the field. Experience with aerosol instrumentation, mass spectrometry, laser techniques as well as computer programming and/or complex data analysis are highly desirable.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Externally imposed deadlines that are set and revised beyond one’s control. Interruptions influence priorities. It is often difficult to anticipate the nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days. Meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to the position. Occasional exposure to demands and pressure from persons other than the immediate supervisor can be expected. Conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress may be experienced.
