CAVS is a seeking a candidate with a strong background in successfully leading industrial research and development within steel mills and other primary metals based heavy industry. Experience in steelmaking, rolling, pipe forming, wheel forming, submerged arc welding, and heat treatment are necessary. The successful candidate will also need to have strong experiences related to specifying and acquisition of lab equipment and instrumentation. The Assistant Research Professor will report to the CAVS Associate Director for Engineering Mechanics and Materials Science.

Salary Grade:  UC

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Lead industry driven materials science and engineering research with a focus on the thermomechanical processing of steel and aluminum alloys.
2. Work with regional industry on the development of new products and technologies – including rolling, piping, welding
3. Research the microstructure formation processes in steels, aluminum, and other metals in order to invent/predict/optimize the mechanical properties of finished products.
4. Support technology-based workforce training within regional primary metals industry.
5. Write proposals to solicit funding in related research areas and support the expansion of computational and experimental infrastructures relevant to the industry.
6. Actively pursue journal publications, issue technical reports, and invention disclosures.

Minimum Qualifications:

A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline.
Post-doctoral experience leading applied research within heavy industry setting.
Successfully lead research and development with primary metals industries which rely on casting and secondary processes (e.g., Rolling, pipe forming, welding)
