This position is a 75% Research and 25% Extension appointment (tenure track/tenured) with Mississippi State University located at the Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) in Stoneville, MS, with an academic affiliation in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology, and Plant Pathology at Mississippi State University. The incumbent will pursue an innovative and comprehensive program in entomology focused on management of insect pests of agronomic crops in Mississippi considering scientific merit and practical needs of Mississippi producers. The primary function of this position will be to develop, coordinate and implement applied research and Extension programs aimed at managing insect pests of agronomic crops in Mississippi. The incumbent will work as part of a multidisciplinary team involved in research and Extension. In particular, the incumbent will conduct research on established and experimental technologies (transgenic traits, insecticides, biological processes), practices that improve integrated pest management (IPM), and develop novel approaches to manage primary and secondary insect pests of cotton, corn, soybean, rice, grain sorghum, peanut, and wheat.
The incumbent will develop and maintain close working relationships with producers and the agricultural industry, including commodity groups, governmental agencies, stakeholders, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) researchers, MSU Extension specialists, Extension agents, and others to ensure that their entomology research program is focused on the most pressing needs of stakeholders. The incumbent should have experience in IPM of row crop agricultural production and demonstrated, or potential for, excellence in research and scientific article publication as well as proficiency in extramural grant writing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will conduct entomology research related to the optimization of row crop production systems in the Mississippi Delta. In developing the research program, the incumbent will work with commodity groups, producers, and agribusinesses to promote efficient IPM practices in agronomic crops and identify techniques to effectively and efficiently manage insect pests while protecting crop yields and farm profitability. Research is expected to include evaluating damage thresholds, evaluating new and existing insecticides, studying transgenic and other types of host plant resistance, evaluating insecticide susceptibility, and developing other IPM-related strategies. The incumbent will cooperate with other entomologists, agronomists, plant pathologists, and additional scientific disciplines represented at DREC, Mississippi State University, USDA-ARS, as well as other groups when appropriate to develop and improve IPM programs in agronomic crops. The incumbent will facilitate information transfer to stakeholders of research-based insect management recommendations via use of appropriate technology. The incumbent will collaborate with colleagues in grant and contract proposals seeking funding to support applied research efforts. Furthermore, the incumbent will demonstrate and present information and updates
through effective program delivery by planning and participating in local, state, regional, and national professional and stakeholder meetings.
The incumbent should have a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research findings and troubleshoot problems with producers, consultants, and Extension personnel. Publishing research findings in appropriate professional research journals is expected. The incumbent will be encouraged to participate in graduate student training and contribute to collaborative teaching in off-campus and campus-based, educational programs in entomology and pest management, whether formal or non-formal. The successful candidate will actively participate in professional societies and organizations as well as appropriate DREC and MSU committees and commodity groups. These activities should include involvement in coordinating entomology and IPM research goals and objectives through collaborative efforts. This position will work closely with Extension to facilitate deliverable information related to IPM to stakeholders.
An earned Ph.D. in entomology or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning. Individuals who are ABD (all but dissertation) will be considered. Acceptable candidate must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, experience with entomology, IPM, statistics, and experimental design.
ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):
Strong experience in integrated pest management in row crop agricultural production and demonstrated excellence or potential in conducting research, obtaining extramural grant funding, and publishing scholarly work.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Applicant must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and leadership skills are also important.
