The Associate Vice President will be joining MSU at an exciting time and will join the ORED team taking a leading role on the institutional-wide focus on igniting innovation across the campus through research. The Associate Vice President for Research reports directly to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and is a senior member of the management team. The Associate Vice President may act on the behalf of the Vice President and is responsible for assisting the VP on both strategic planning and the day-to-day operations of the office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide strategic and tactical leadership for growth, focusing on “igniting innovation” and accelerating MSU’s vision by harnessing the power, talents and expertise of the entire MSU community.

• Engage with existing partners and build new federal, state and local partnerships driving innovation and implementing strategic initiatives.

• Develop approaches to improve teamwork, collegiality, coordination, and camaraderie across the institution including facilitating multi-investigator proposals and research teams.

• Provide leadership in developing and implementing strategies, initiatives, and approaches to increase the success of faculty and staff obtaining competitive federal, state, corporate and foundation funding.

• Direct and coordinate engagements with funding agencies, ensuring compliance with stated regulations guidelines and appropriate response to other programmatic needs as identified by internal and external stakeholders.

• Serve when appropriate as lead Principal Investigator for large, university wide projects such as the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) projects.

• Serve as principal liaison between faculty and university administrative staff in implementing strategies and initiatives, providing leadership in faculty development programs, promoting research integrity at all levels, and ensuring compliance.

• Guide efforts to monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness, effect changes required for improvement, and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A record of personal excellence in research/scholarship.
• An earned doctorate and academic credentials appropriate for appointment as a tenured associate professor at MSU.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities, including building collaborative ventures, partnerships, coalitions with business and industry, state and federal agencies, and other organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Understanding of and commitment to the MSU land grant university mission.
• Demonstrated ability to build and manage multi-disciplinary teams, promote team science, and organize multi-institutional research projects.
• Academic credentials appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor at MSU.
• Experience with university generated intellectual property, faculty entrepreneurship, and technology commercialization.
• Demonstrated ability and commitment to promoting and developing success in others through formal and informal faculty development initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Demonstrated understanding of roles of federal and non-federal agencies in research and development.
• Demonstrated experience with the land grant mission and an understanding of university led innovation and commercialization.
• Experienced leadership of diverse groups of people, a broad set of initiatives, and cross-sectors of disciplines.
• Demonstrated skills in grantsmanship, faculty mentoring, budget development, management, and resource allocation.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and safe research environments for all.
• Demonstrated unwavering commitment to research integrity and ethics.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
2. Frequent externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; irregular hours may be required; meeting of deadlines and coordination of related activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
3. Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
4. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
