This is a 9-month, tenure-track position in which the successful candidate will develop an independent research program in avian physiology. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with other scientists within Poultry Science, other Departments/Units on campus (e.g., College of Veterinary Medicine, etc.) as well as Extension personnel and poultry industry leaders on avian physiology research. This is an appointment with an anticipated 60% research and 40% teaching appointment depending on the candidate’s qualifications. This position will be on main campus and will be located within the Department of Poultry Science.

Department Profile:

The Department of Poultry Science at Mississippi State University is one of six poultry science degree granting departments remaining in the United States. Our research programs and teaching curriculum mirror current industry practices. As such, we have a large percentage of graduates that work in the industry and allied industry (62% as a current average). However, all graduates have opportunities for employment in the poultry industry. The department supports Mississippi's largest commodity, which has provided 100% placement of our graduates since the first Poultry Science degree was awarded in 1948. A very high percentage of our pre-vet students are accepted into vet school. A baccalaureate degree in Poultry Science is an excellent start to a career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties will include the development of a nationally and internationally recognized research program focused on Avian Physiology. The successful candidate will develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally (government and industry) funded research program in avian physiology. The specific areas may include avian reproductive, endocrine, developmental, digestive, stress physiology, breeder and/or hatchery management. The ideal candidate will complement existing programs in nutrition, microbiome, health, and food safety.
The candidate is also expected to actively engage in scholarly activity related to instruction, including, but not limited to teaching courses, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, and mentoring undergraduate/graduate students. The incumbent will update and teach two (2) undergraduate/graduate-level foundation poultry science courses (PO 4324/6324 Avian Reproduction and PO 4303/6303 Breeding and Hatching and develop one (1) graduate-level course in comparative animal physiology to be taught every other year. The candidate’s teaching responsibilities and/or appointment may change in accordance with the candidate’s expertise and needs of the department. Development of a strong graduate student training program is expected. The candidate will participate in graduate (and undergraduate) education by mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing research results in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.
This position will be based in Starkville, MS, but may require occasional travel to other MSU and partner locations as needed. The successful candidate will work cooperatively with faculty and staff based in the Research and Extension Centers as well as other MSU locations. The successful candidate will also be expected to work with relevant stakeholders to address needs and with extension personnel to disseminate results. Supervision of employees and/or graduate students will be expected.
Faculty member will be expected to pursue and procure extramural funding in support of their research program. Research results will be communicated via stakeholder and end-user meetings, MAFES bulletins, refereed journal articles, and other publications as appropriate. Service to relevant professional organizations and Mississippi State University is also expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in poultry science or closely related field with an emphasis on poultry is required. The successful candidate will be expected to develop nationally recognized teaching and research programs in the subject discipline, pursue extramural funds in support of research aims, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to the potential for maintaining an active research program, a strong emphasis will be placed on demonstrated ability to communicate and teach effectively, interact and collaborate with colleagues, and to operate as a member of a research team. Acceptable candidates must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate research results in a variety of publications; statistical, experimental design, and analysis expertise; ability to work independently or as part of a team; and experience with data collection in the preferred candidate’s specialization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those with demonstrated success in pursuit of extramural funding, record of refereed journal publication, evidence of cross discipline collaborations, experience working with stakeholder and end-user groups.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The individual should be self-motivated, fit well in a multidisciplinary team environment, and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to publish in the peer-reviewed literature and evidence of grantsmanship
