This position oversees maintenance and physical plant operations for MSU’s College Park and Riley Campuses in Meridian. The role encompasses oversight of more than 260,000 square feet of buildings and 26 acres.

Salary Grade:  BMT-S

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Estimate, plan, and coordinate building maintenance, construction, renovation, and related projects.
2. Supervise, schedule, and assign work of the building maintenance crew(s) and outside contractors, and monitor their work in order to assure proper staffing and quality standards.
3. Inspect jobs, equipment and tools in order to assure compliance with codes, guidelines, university standards, and safety rules.
4. Interview, recommend for employment, train, evaluate and discipline the building maintenance crew and student support staff.
5. In accordance with MSU purchasing policies, verify and approve requisitions; order, control and account for supplies and equipment in order to maintain an adequate inventory; document and approve job time and materials used.
6. Inspect plans, prints, sketches and specifications for projects and related jobs and provide technical assistance. 7. Evaluate and test new products, equipment and processes.
8. Respond to questions, complaints and needs of all levels of university employees, students, parents and the public in order to provide technical information and assistance.
9. In accordance with MSU purchasing policies, audit and oversee vendor bills and charges; ensure that all charges are accurate.
10. Initiate and prepare written and computer generated special, periodic, fiscal, time study, and labor reports, and maintain records.
11. Interact with Department Heads, other University Management and other Skilled Crafts Supervisors in order to review, discuss and coordinate work.
12. Oversee custodial operations and contracts for the campus.
13. Maintain campus vehicle fleet.
14. Monitor and control energy efficiency of the campus, particularly related to HVAC.
15. Maintain grounds including parking lots, green spaces, courtyards and other university owned outdoor spaces.
16. This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include overseeing the safe use of equipment and materials and maintaining safety standards for the support staff when working in hazardous or dangerous conditions.
17. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Eight years of experience in commercial, industrial or residential construction or building maintenance using conventional and innovative techniques.
3. Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education as approved by Human Resources Management.
4. Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous supervisory experience.
Post secondary training or education in a relevant field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
2. Knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations.
3. Ability to exercise tact and discretion with customers and the public.
4. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbally and in writing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Frequent - externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; irregular and extended hours may be anticipated, including nights and weekends; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position.
• Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
• Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
• Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
• Hearing requirements: heavy phone contact requires ability to hear and respond to telephone conversations.
