Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Director of the First-Year Experience (FYE) Office at Mississippi State University will provide leadership for the FYE and its role in improving student success. The Director will collaborate with campus stakeholders in developing and implementing courses, programs, and events related to students’ first-year experience.

Salary Grade:  16

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Work with stakeholders to collect data and continuously evaluate and improve the FYE 1003 curriculum.
2. Recruit, hire and retain FYE 1003 instructors who are excellent at promoting student success.
3. Recruit, hire and develop peer leaders for FYE 1003
4. Organize orientations and trainings for new FYE 1003 instructors and peer leaders
5. Develop and maintain a repository of course lesson plans and other resources for FYE classes
6. Create and maintain an FYE 1003 course for instructors on Canvas/MSU’s LMS.
7. Provide continuing professional development opportunities for FYE instructors
8. Teach a 1-hour peer-leadership seminar during the fall semester
9. Teach a minimum of 1 section of FYE 1003 each fall
10. Develop, promote and administer a 1-hour FYE course to serve transfer students
11. Collaborate with campus offices to develop learning opportunities/events in and outside of the FYE 1003 course.
12. Communicate with instructors and peer leaders to provide early intervention strategies for students.
13. Promote the FYE Office and its course(s) across campus
14. Oversee the FYE budget to support FYE and collaborate with campus stakeholders
15. Utilize data to improve peer leadership, instruction, and the curriculum
16. Provide services and support to first-year transfer students
17. Supervise student workers, graduate assistance, and other professional staff as the FYE Office expands
18. Work closely with related student success offices to enhance the student experience and promote retention, persistence, and graduation for students
19. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related discipline and Three (3) years of experience relevant to first-year programs, student success or academic affairs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to maintain calendars, plan events, and work with complex class scheduling
• Ability to analyze and solve problems and build a strong FYE program
• Ability to interpret data and make informed and strategic decisions
• Ability to provide servant leadership to instructors, peer leaders, and other
stakeholders across campus
• Ability to work in diverse settings and maintain/develop collegiality

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
