Candidates with strengths in research and communication are preferred. Applicants should be able to articulate a prospective research program that has promise for sustainable external funding and regional/national recognition. The faculty member will be administratively responsible to the Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute with a joint appointment in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department or Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. The faculty member will work in concert with faculty and staff from their home department at Mississippi State University and other departments across campus as well as other institutions.

The roles of the intermittent employee will fall into three categories: field, laboratory, and outreach/education. The first category involves assisting with shark bottom longline surveys throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico. Specifically, the employee will be responsible for preparing gear, performing shark and fish dissections, collecting samples, and recording and entering data. The second category involves completing various laboratory processing tasks using samples collected during the bottom longline surveys. The third category involves assisting with outreach and education events and developing materials to use at these events. Travel for field work and outreach events may be necessary.

This position is based at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of this major initiative to generate and analyze metabarcoding data from thousands of marine water samples, significantly advancing our understanding of ocean life. This role involves extensive laboratory work in development of high-throughput metabarcoding assays; library preparation using those assays; bioinformatics data analysis, including taxonomic database improvement and the evaluation of novel assignment tools; and data publishing to global biodiversity repositories. This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with leading scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), University of California – Irvine, and the Minderoo Foundation, and to make foundational contributions to global marine biodiversity monitoring and open data infrastructure.
