Position Function:

To coordinate and conduct research focused on elucidating mechanisms associated with pathogens, primarily Avian Pathogenic E. coli strains and their relationship to health of laying hens and heavy broilers. Areas of focus may include but are not limited to molecular determinants of pathogenesis, impact of strain variations, and tissue tropism of APEC; identifying immunological targets that will confer cross-protection to APEC in poultry; investigating pre- and pro-biotic interventions, both in ovo and post-hatch, and their effects on pathogen colonization and gut health. Mitigation effects of environmental or nutritional factors as they relate to exacerbation or, alternatively, mitigation, may be a focus. Contributions to vaccine development are expected, as needed.

Salary Grade:  UC

Department Profile:

The Poultry Science Department currently houses approximately 50 undergraduate students, 16 graduate students, and 11 faculty. The Department conducts teaching, research and Extension activities on the 55 acre Poultry Research Unit on the MSU South Farm, which includes facilities for research broilers, eggs/embyos, and layers. In addition, two tunnel research houses nearby house approximately 40,000 broilers. The Department has recently renovated the industry-relevant processing plant, with assistance from an industry advisory board. We will move into a new 29,000 square foot Poultry Science Building in the Fall of 2020. The Department offers Bachelors of Science degrees with concentrations in Applied Poultry Management and Science and Pre-Vet Science. Both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered from within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Poultry Science.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

To conduct research in the areas described above that will be published in quality journals.
Assist in seeking extramural funding.
Support research as described.
Interact with staff and students.
Contribute to department strategic goals and service efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Poultry Science, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, or related fields, with expertise in animal husbandry and processing, food safety, developmental biology and/or immunology

Preferred Qualifications:

Post-doctoral experience

Exposure to dust and chicken dander is expected.
