The Turfgrass Extension Associate will provide science-based outreach in support of Mississippi turfgrass managers. In addition, the successful candidate will assist in managing applied research projects.

Salary Grade:  13

Department Profile:

Mississippi State University is Mississippi's senior comprehensive land-grant institution and has the largest on-campus enrollment (>22,000) of the eight state institutions of higher learning. All components of the university have a strong commitment to teaching, research, and service. The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences has 31 on- and 26 off-campus faculty members engaged in teaching, research, and extension and/or service programs, most of who carry joint appointments. The programs are supported by state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment, and trained support and professional staff. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Environmental Sciences in Agricultural Systems, with Master's or Doctoral graduate students concentrating in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Weed Science.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific duties include: assisting in the coordination and delivery of Extension education (ex.: Extension publications, Field days, short-courses, and conferences); coordinating and supervising field studies; working closely with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate student workers in the completion of tasks assigned by the Turfgrass Extension Specialist; maintenance of field-based projects, equipment, and chemical storage; working collaboratively and cooperatively with other faculty and staff; and the presentation of results at professional and stakeholder events. The position will require working knowledge of equipment and machinery, proper application of pesticides, and the ability to work well with others.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a M.S. degree in agronomy, horticulture, agriculture, weed science, or related field. Applicants will be expected to pursue a Ph.D. in Weed Science or Agronomy related to turfgrass. Applicants are expected to have the following characteristics: excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills; the ability to work as part of a team; and the ability to manage multiple projects and activities. The successful candidate should be able to work and communicate effectively with a range of constituents, including administrators, faculty, staff, students, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
Practical experience in soil testing and fertilization techniques, application of pesticides, operation of general turf, and farm equipment is highly desired. A Mississippi pesticide applicator's license must be obtained within 60 days of occupying the position. A valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and expertise pertaining to weed control in turfgrass. Prior demonstration of leadership and supervisory skills is preferred. Experience with appropriate computer software and technology is preferred (specifically: SAS, R, Prism Graph Pad, Sigma Plot, ARM, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel Spreadsheet).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
