This is a 12-month, tenure-track position consisting of a 75% Research appointment and a 25% Extension appointment. A portion of the research appointment may include facilities management responsibilities. The position will be administratively responsible to the Coastal Research and Extension Center and assigned an academic home in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences at Mississippi State University.

Coastal Research and Extension Center serves as Mississippi State University’s “southern exposure”. The position is located at the White Sands Research Unit in Poplarville, MS, which is administratively associated with the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi. The position will be responsible for the management of the resources and four-person staff of the White Sands Research Unit, a 440-acre station in Pearl River County, uses its herd of over 120 beef cows and up to 250 stocker cattle to study the most effective and efficient ways to grow beef cattle.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor will develop an active research program targeting economically viable and sustainable beef production including forage and grazing systems in South Mississippi. The incumbent will work closely with beef cattle scientists on the campus of Mississippi State University and at other Research and Extension Centers within the state to develop a comprehensive program. Incumbent will be expected to build a nationally recognized and extramurally-funded research program including refereed publications. Active collaborations within the department, college, and university as well as with external stakeholders such as industry, other universities, government and nongovernmental organizations, etc. are expected. Service will be pursued via a combination of activities at the university, center and department, professional associations, field days and workshops, web-based communications, and written reports that will inform and educate Extension Agents, beef cattle producers, and other clientele.
An earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution of higher learning in Animal Science with emphasis in beef cattle management, ruminant nutrition, or physiology using forage-based beef production systems. Candidates who are ABD will be considered.
ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):
Minimum plus experience with Southeastern U.S. beef cattle production in the areas of beef cattle management, ruminant nutrition, physiology, and forage and grazing management. Experience communicating research results to industry stakeholders is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated proficiency in human relations skills, leadership ability, ability to function as part of a team, ability to supervise Research Associates and support staff, oral and written communication skills.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Incumbent must be able to conduct an outdoor research program involving cattle in South Mississippi. Able to work in extreme weather conditions - high temperatures and humidity; cold temperatures and humidity.
