To perform a variety of routine and specialized research/diagnostic duties in the field and laboratory requiring considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of applied sciences, laboratory techniques, and methods for obtaining research/diagnostic data. Employees perform work independently within established methods and procedures.

Salary Grade:  11

Department Profile:

The Department of Chemistry is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, and offers B.S.,M.S., and PhD degrees. Chemistry has approximately 80 graduate students and 120 undergraduate chemistry majors. The department is housed in the Hand Laboratory building.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Collect research/diagnostic samples such as plants, animals, soils, lumber, etc., and prepare for laboratory analysis.
2. Prepare and apply chemicals to research/diagnostic samples.
3. Participate in establishing and maintaining research plants, animals, lumber, and cultures.
4. Calibrate, operate, and maintain various laboratory equipment and devices in analysis of research/diagnostic samples.
5. Order and maintain laboratory supplies and materials.
6. May demonstrate laboratory procedures to students or others.
7. Gather, compile, and summarize data. Set up tables and graphs and assist in statistical analysis.
8. May perform literature searches.
9. May use computer to maintain data and prepare reports.
10. Assist in preparing materials for teaching purposes.
11. Perform related duties as assigned.

Supervision
¬Received: Supervision from a designated faculty member or scientist.
Given: Provide assistance to employees in routine sample collection or lab duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree with major course work in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment.
-or-
Two years of post-secondary training in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment and two years of field and lab work experience including experimentation and research studies or closely related work experience.
-or-
High school education or equivalent plus four years of field and/or lab work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Field and laboratory work experience beyond the minimum required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must have working knowledge of chemical and biochemical safety procedures at MSU. This includes how to properly order, ship, store, and dispose of research grade biomolecules and chemicals. Skill in recombinant protein expression, separations, or other chemistry or biochemical laboratory procedures preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/laboratory environment. Requires some lifting of up to 25 pounds. Work may involve moderate exposure to chemicals, dust, and/or unpleasant odors.
