The Social Media Coordinator executes the social media strategy for institutional accounts, ensuring Mississippi State University maintains a professional and consistent social media presence. This position monitors the social media landscape, develops and publishes content, reviews performance data, and assists with strategy development. The Social Media Coordinator works with a team of communication professionals and reports to the Chief Communications Officer or his designee.

Salary Grade:  14

Department Profile:

The Office of Public Affairs communicates Mississippi State University's message of learning, research and service to a global audience across multiple digital, print and broadcast platforms.

Our award-winning staff provides leadership for strategic and crisis communications; marketing and branding; news and media relations; university-wide publications including MSU’s Alumnus magazine; and digital and social media content development including the university's website.

Our writers, editors, photographers and graphic designers support these areas and provide services to the campus community. We also implement and oversee the university’s branding, including the visual identity standards.

In addition, OPA provides administrative leadership to MSU’s University Television Center and campus radio station WMSV-FM 91.1.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1.Develops social media content through researching topics, writing copy, identifying images, and coordinating with a team of designers to develop graphics. Generates and publishes content across seven social media accounts for platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and LinkedIn, along with additional accounts and platforms that may be added as needed.

2.Implements various accessibility practices across accounts to make content available to a wider audience such as adding alternative text for images, captioning videos, and other methods.

3. Monitors public and private comments and questions from social media users during regular working hours and during established intervals on nights and weekends. Responds to questions and elevates issues according to established procedures and guidelines.

4. During emergency situations, posts emergency messages and works closely with the crisis communication team on a coordinated response with the Chief Communications Officer or designee.

5. Retrieves analytics to measure the impact and success of social media efforts. Assists the CCO with developing reports and assessing the effectiveness of current strategies. Implements new content and engagement approaches as directed by the CCO.

6. Monitors local news, national news, and trending topics that may impact the University's social media presence. Adjusts social media content and posting schedule accordingly.

7. Lead regular group discussions with social media coordinators and managers across campus to share ideas and strategize on creating engaging content, scheduling, and posting.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, mass communication, advertising, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university. One year of demonstrated experience managing a corporate or organizational social media accounts through a professional position or an internship within the past two years. Experience posting on a variety of social media platforms. Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

•Familiarity with MSU

•Two years of professional experience managing a corporate or organizational social media account within the past two years

•Experience working with a professional team to achieve goals

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to monitor accounts during evening and weekend hours

• Ability to respond promptly during emergency situations

• Ability to complete occasional day travel to other MSU locations to fulfill job responsibilities

• Knowledge of how to use social media platforms as professional communication tools

• Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to details

• Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to concisely express complex information and identify and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors

• Ability to work effectively under deadlines

• Ability to make appropriate decisions and exercise discretion

• Ability to work independently and cooperate with team members

• Ability to read and understand complex information

• Excellent computer skills, particularly in the use of email, digital calendars, project management software, and the Internet as a research tool

• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel

• Ability to shoot basic photos and videos for use on social media

• Proven knowledge of and experience using Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• No unusual physical requirements. Requires occasional or light lifting; nearly all work is performed in an indoor facility.

• Frequent - Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.

• Job occasionally requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.

• Job occasionally requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

• Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
