This position reports to the Research Program Manager and provides support and assistance to facilitate research activities on the Poultry Research Unit on South Farm at Mississippi State University.

Salary Grade:  11

Department Profile:

The Department of Poultry Science at Mississippi State University is one of six poultry science degree granting departments remaining in the United States. Our research programs and teaching curriculum mirror current industry practices. As such, we have a large percentage of graduates that work in the industry and allied industry (62% as a current average). However, all graduates have opportunities for employment in the poultry industry. The department supports Mississippi's largest commodity, which has provided 100% placement of our graduates since the first Poultry Science degree was awarded in 1948. A very high percentage of our pre-vet students are accepted into vet school. A baccalaureate degree in Poultry Science is an excellent start to a career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform a variety of duties involving in the handling of research birds, maintenance of research facilities, and collection and recording of research data.

1 – Assist professors, staff and/or students with research and teaching projects at the farm, including but not limited to setting up pens, weighing birds, catching birds for sampling or processing, working in the processing plant, bagging and transporting feed, unloading pallets of feed, and collecting and recording research data (body weights, feed weights, mortality, temperature, relative humidity, egg production, identification numbers, treatments numbers and/or letters, organ weights, hatchability, etc.)

2 – Animal care, including but not limited to feeding, cleaning, and vaccinating, preparation of building for receipt of chicks, picking up mortality in research and tunnel houses; assist when tunnel house birds are sold (including potentially occasional night shifts); and maintain proper environments which includes responding to controller alarms from tunnel houses.

3 - Assist in general maintenance and care of buildings, equipment, and grounds, to include but not limited to:
a) Mowing and outdoor maintenance when needed
b) Decaking the tunnel houses
c) Proper disposal of used experimental materials

4 - Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: Four (4) years directly related to duties and responsibilities specified.
Licensure: Valid driver's license.
Substitution: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Poultry Science and comparable experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge, skill and abilities to work with animal care and general farm maintenance.
Ability to work hard.
Ability and skill working with broilers and other birds.
Ability to maintain chicken houses.
Knowledge of building alarms.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
- Requires heavy physical work: heavy lifting, pushing or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
- Involves exposure to dust and chicken dander.
