The sweetpotato program is hiring a postdoctoral researcher to investigate sustainable and innovative strategies for sweetpotato production. This postdoctoral position is funded for a period of 2 years, with the potential of being extended contingent upon available funding. The incumbent is expected to work closely with the research team to satisfy the goals and expectations of funded projects. Areas of emphasis are sweetpotato variety development, controlled environment production strategies, sweetpotato virus testing, and maintenance of tissue culture repository.

The individual will be a staff member of the North MS Research and Extension Center, and be housed at the Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch Experiment Station, Pontotoc, MS. This 640-acre research facility is a premier information source for the Mississippi sweetpotato industry and contributes research results throughout the world. Resources include office and staff, five greenhouses, and various laboratory space. The Pontotoc Branch is located near the main sweetpotato production area of the state and is in constant communication with innovative producers and scientists across the U.S.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead data collection and generation with other research teams to facilitate cross-project collaboration
• Establishment, implementation, and maintenance of field, greenhouse, and laboratory research
• Analyze data and publish in peer-reviewed journals, Extension bulletins, website updates, and newsletters
• Perform other tasks as necessary under the direction of the principal investigator
• The candidate must have a PhD in Horticulture, Agronomy, Biological Sciences or related field.
• Strong writing skills
• Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative environment
• Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicators Certification from the state of MS.
ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):
• Experience with tissue culture
• Greenhouse production experience
• Familiarity with laboratory procedures and basic protocols for processing samples (DNA extraction, media preparation, etc.)
• Grantsmanship experience
• Proven publication record
• Quantitative and computing skills, including bioinformatics and statistical tools
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The candidate must be capable of working within a team environment and exhibit strong self-motivation. He/she should have good working knowledge about experimental designs, how to manage large data sets using Excel, and conduct statistical analyses using SAS (plus other software such as ARM).
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Regularly exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dirt, chemicals, etc.
Job frequently requires walking, standing, lifting, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands.
Requires handling of heavy weight objects up to 60lbs.
