The equine surgical internship at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a 12-month clinical program providing advanced training in medicine and surgery. The program is designed to qualify the individual for entry into an approved residency program leading to board certification in a recognized veterinary specialty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Equine Surgery Internship at Mississippi State University is a 12-month clinical program which will include participation in equine surgery and emergency care. The internship will focus on providing clinical, hospital based service while learning through interaction by way of consultation with clinical specialists in equine surgery, equine internal medicine, diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, pathology and ophthalmology. The surgery intern will rotate with a resident and the senior faculty in providing after hours emergency care. Other duties will include assisting in new student orientation, supervision, and instruction. Participation in rounds, seminars, and student laboratories are required.

Clinical rotations will include 10 months on equine surgery service and 2 months on elective rotations. Elective rotations must be approved by the surgery faculty member. Teaching responsibilities will include participation in freshman, sophomore and junior veterinary student labs, student rounds, and case discussions. The intern is responsible for emergency care of clinical patients (under supervision of a faculty member) one third of the on-call rotation, or as assigned by the Service Chief.
Limited opportunity for scholarly activity, including taking courses at MSU is permitted as the clinical schedule allows, and must be approved by the Service Chief.

Presentation of one seminar will be required during each of the fall and spring semesters. Also, the intern is strongly encouraged to submit a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Minimum Qualifications:

Prerequisites other than being a Graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine: Graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school and completion of an approved internship in equine medicine and surgery.
