Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching responsibilities are two courses per semester. Offerings include undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of expertise, a turn in the United States survey course, and a graduate seminar. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the department's longstanding Ph.D. program and vibrant intellectual and professional life is especially favored

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in history with an emphasis US History, 1820-1860 by time of appointment is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of successful teaching and publications in the subject area are preferred. Also preferred is the ability to broaden the department's offerings in African American and/or 19th Century US History.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Conduct research in area of specialty
-Publish scholarly articles, monographs, and books in the area of specialty
-Participate in professional meetings by giving papers, presiding at sessions, and serving as discussant
-Promote the development of the historical profession locally and nationally by reviewing books and articles for the professional journals, serving on profession society committees and boards, and serving as consultant for local and national groups and agencies as the need or occasion arises
-Teach undergraduate survey classes
-Teach advanced undergraduate students in upper-level relating to historical specialty
-Teach graduate courses in area of specialty, including seminars, specials programs, and directed readings
-Serve on graduate committees for M.A. and Ph.D. students
-Direct graduate theses and dissertations
-Serve on departmental, college, and university committees. For tenure-track but untenured persons, expectations in this category
