Position Function:
Apply systems analysis and design techniques to support both new and existing software applications and database systems within the College of Veterinary Medicine- Information Technology Services. Assess and define software and technical specifications. Provide analysis, development, and implementation support for both new and ongoing projects. This position is responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, security, backup, support, and maintenance of the college’s hospital and laboratory information system and its database backend.

1. Assumes lead analyst role for small applications or assume subsystem responsibility for major applications.
2. Stays abreast of the latest trends and developments in information technology and make recommendations as appropriate.
3. Evaluates and establishes priorities to meet desired goals.
4. Works independently under overall project objectives and requirements.
5. Analyzes technical and functional application specifications.
6. Designs program logic to meet technical and functional specifications.
7. Establishes database and file requirements.
8. Designs, codes, and tests application software, as well as modify existing software to reflect changes in system or application requirements.
9. Codes efficiently adhering to established programming standards.
10. Prepares and maintains quality documentation to manage program development and revisions.
11. Completes assigned tasks meeting deadlines.
12. Performs problem determination and analysis.
13. Responds to and solves problems.
14. Prepare instructions and user documentation.
15. Modify programs to increase operating efficiency.
16. Respond to changes in work processes.
17. Prepare test data and validate software for accuracy.
18. Be available weekends and nights for performance of duties, including periodic on-call responsibilities.
19. Establish and maintain effective communications with clients and ITS staff.
20. Be supportive and understanding with clients.
21. Demonstrate good work ethics.
22. Train new employees, students, and provide technical assistance to junior staff members and students.
23. Work experience with databases is a must.
24. Work experience with generating reports from a database is a must.
25. Work experience with a front end web interface to a database.
26. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related area.
Experience: Two (2) years full-time experience developing and implementing database driven information systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Working knowledge of Unix, strong programming skills, experience with a relational data base management system (preferably Oracle), and demonstrated ability to assume responsibility for supporting multiple systems.
2. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to plan and organize, personal initiative, demonstrated ability to perform with professionalism and produce quality, reliable results.
3. Other Desirable Qualifications: Previous experience with data modeling and/or developing systems in a Unix/Oracle environment using any or all of the following: Java, SQL, XML.
4. Must be able to pull reports from a database (preferably Oracle). Examples of reports include financial, case numbers, and other ad hoc reports.
5. Experience with Apache Tomcat.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Sitting: required to be able to sit for long periods of time, as typical days will involve sitting at a PC or workstation or sitting in meetings
2. Dexterity and visual acuity: required to be able to use computer screens and keyboards.
3. Ability to team lift servers into data racks on occasion. Nothing over 50 lbs.
