We are seeking up to two Research Epidemiological Modelers with an interest and experience in computational aspects of molecular and spatial epidemiology to work with an interdisciplinary team of professionals at Mississippi State University and the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Geospatial and Environmental Epidemiology Research Unit (GEERU). The candidates will be responsible for development of advanced computational models of infectious disease evolution, transmission, and persistence with particular emphasis on diseases that impact agricultural infrastructure and pose a biosecurity threat to human populations in the U.S. and beyond. The candidate will be based out of the Geosystems Research Institute (GRI), an institute in the High Performance Collaboratory (HPC2) at Mississippi State University. Through these collaborations the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a large, diverse, and well-connected professional network to leverage in their future career.
Postdoctoral Associate 191001 - Northern Gulf Institute Miami, FL
The principal function of the postdoc is to contribute to configuring an Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) water quality model for the South Florida region and use this model to simulate and analyze past and projected regional patterns, with a focus on net primary production and subsequent carbon transport and settlement rates in and out of Biscayne Bay. The outputs of the coastal model will be used to characterize climate change impacts on water quality and carbon transport in and out of the estuary. Addition to the modeling efforts, the position will also have the tasks of constructing literature reviews and providing carbon data input for NOAA databases. The postdoc will be based at the NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida. She/he will be part of a multidisciplinary team, which includes researchers at NOAA, Mississippi State University, University of Miami, University of South Florida, Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, and Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association.

The function of the successful candidate will be to provide agronomic educational assistance to producers and conduct research on cropping systems for agronomic crops in the Mississippi Delta Region with an emphasis on rice production. The successful candidate will work in unison with other state Extension specialists and county Extension agents to strengthen the overall Extension program by facilitating technology transfer and adoption of best management practices within the Mississippi Delta. In addition, the individual will be expected to collaborate with other Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) and Mississippi State University Extension Service (MSU-ES) scientists to ensure research and Extension based programs are focused on the needs of stakeholders. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a strong multi-disciplinary team addressing prevalent issues in crop production systems. The successful candidate will work closely with commodity organizations such as the Mississippi Rice Promotion Board, the Mississippi Rice Council, and the USA Rice Federation. The successful candidate will be expected to foster and maintain good working relationships with state agencies such as, but not limited to, the Bureau of Plant Industry and the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, and organizations such as the Mississippi Agricultural Consultants Association, Mississippi Agricultural Industry Council, the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, and Delta Council.
