The Shelter Program at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking to hire a Clinical Instructor I to join the team of 5 faculty members, 1 rehire retiree, and 3 technicians. The Shelter Medicine Program provides a spay/neuter services to 25+ shelters and rescue groups in Mississippi. The Shelter Program also provides shelter visits for third year veterinary students to perform basic physical examinations, health maintenance evaluations, and population level recommendations for the shelter. The Shelter program also provides training to graduated veterinarians on assessing professional students and veterinarians. The funding for this position is associated with the Nutramax Veterinary Education Training Program. The position is supported by gift funding provided annually for up to five years from Nutramax with the possibility of renewable after the current agreement expires. It will be a 100% soft money-funded position with a one-year renewable contract that can be renewed for up to five years. The incumbent will work as part of a multidisciplinary team involved in research and extension related to water use in agricultural systems. In particular, the incumbent will conduct research on established technologies and practices that improve irrigation efficiency (i.e. computerized hole selection, surge valves, soil moisture sensors, etc.) and develop novel approaches to reduce the demand for irrigation in local agronomic crops. Develop and maintain close working relationships with producers and the agricultural industry, including commodity groups, governmental agencies, stakeholders, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station researchers, MSU Extension specialists, Extension agents, and others. This interaction ensures that irrigation research programs are focused on the most pressing needs of stakeholders. The incumbent should have experience in irrigated row crop agricultural production and demonstrated, or potential for, excellence in research and scientific article publication as well as proficiency in extramural grant writing. In addition to research activities, the successful candidate may be appointed an administrative role as MSU Coordinator of the National Center for Alluvial Aquifer Research.
