Position Function:
MAFES Office of Financial Management is seeking a detail- oriented, highly motivated Accountant (I, II, III, or Senior) to join our team. The successful candidate will perform standard accounting functions such as cost analysis, reconciliation, posting, and expenditure management, as well as analyze financial and operating data and prepare management reports and estimates.
Salary Grade: 14

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Monitors revenue and expenses for federal capacity funds for a large unit; ensures expenditure control and compliance with funding and reporting requirements, agency policies, university policy, and standard accounting procedures.
2. Prepares financial data, and generates reports for budgeting and forecasting, expense tracking, account reconciliation, and reporting, using Microsoft applications.
3. Coordinates the preparation of regularly scheduled and special draws, cost reports, and analyses for local, state, federal, and private funding sources.
4. Reviews and approves expenditures, personnel, and purchasing documents for availability of funding, mathematical correctness, and compliance with university policy and state and federal funding requirements.
5. Analyzes, reconciles, balances, and maintains accounting records as required and/ or requested by the unit.
6. Prepares, reviews, and processes budget, revenue, expense, payroll, and related correcting entries.
7. Assists with procurement activities including, but not limited to, preparing contracts and requisitions for purchases through the use of BullyBuy; communicate with vendors for prices, bids, and other information in coordination with the University Purchasing Department. Procures items for large projects following Mississippi State procurement guidelines.
8. Assists with procurement card management including, but not limited to, physical card management, maintaining system of receipts for monthly reconciliation, keying monthly procard journal vouchers, preparing and submitting monthly procard audits, and processing invoice payments accepting procurement card.
9. Assists with appropriate fiscal paperwork routing and tracking for a large, complex unit.
10. Assists with monthly account reconciliations for a large unit.
11. Assists with annual legislative budget request process.
12. Assists in development of training materials, presentations, and manuals.
13. Participates in management of state appropriations.
14. Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Level I: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related discipline. No experience required.
Level II: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related discipline. Plus 2 years of experience.
Level III: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related discipline. Plus 4 years of experience.
Senior: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related discipline. Plus 6 years of experience.
Substitution allowed:
Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed. When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may apply additional relevant education toward the experience requirement at a rate of one (1) year education per year of required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting
• Certified Public Accountant Certification
• Certified Management Accountant Certification
• Working knowledge of Banner
• Working knowledge of BullyBuy
• Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations, and university financial policies and procedures
• Experience using Excel for financial reporting, budgeting, and reconciliation is preferred.
• Experience with Crystal Reports
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of standard and/or fund accounting principles, methods, and applications.
2. Ability to effectively communicate accounting information, policies, and/or procedures in a manner easily understood by the customer.
3. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
4. Account balancing and reconciling skills.
5. Ability to set up and maintain financial accounts and ledgers.
6. Spreadsheet software skills to quantify and illustrate routine financial reports, statements, and/or projections.
7. Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
8. Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections.
9. Ability to stay abreast of University financial and personnel policies and procedures.

• Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
