Position Function:
To provide specialized nursing and technical support for veterinary oncology patients undergoing diagnostic, therapeutic, and supportive care procedures; supervise/teach students in the practice of veterinary oncology; maintain oncology equipment and treatment records; and assist clinicians in delivering comprehensive oncology care.

AHC - Oncology Service
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist with the evaluation, treatment, and monitoring of oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and other cancer-related treatments.
• Prepare and administer chemotherapy and other oncology medications in accordance with established safety protocols and regulatory guidelines.
• Monitor chemotherapy pharmacy inventory, ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous drugs, and maintain accurate treatment records.
• Set up and maintain oncology treatment areas and specialized equipment.
• Monitor patients during treatments and recovery periods, recognizing and responding to adverse reactions or complications.
• Collect and process laboratory samples, interpret basic laboratory data, and communicate patient status to clinicians.
• Educate and support clients regarding oncology treatment plans, medication administration, home care instructions, and potential side effects.
• Instruct veterinary and veterinary technician students on oncology nursing procedures, chemotherapy safety, patient handling, case management, and supportive care techniques.
• Supervise and assist students during oncology procedures and patient treatments and evaluate student performance as assigned.
• Maintain detailed medical records, treatment logs, chemotherapy administration records, and billing documentation.
• Assist with scheduling and coordination of oncology appointments and follow-up care.
• Participate in maintaining compliance with hospital safety standards and hazardous drug handling protocols.
Minimum Qualifications:
Trainee Level
High School Diploma or Equivalent. Must possess a veterinary technology or technician degree. Must obtain certification within 1 calendar year of hire.
Level I
High School Diploma or Equivalent. Certification as a Veterinary Technician or Registered Nurse, plus 4 years of related experience.
Level II
High School Diploma or Equivalent. Certification as a Veterinary Technician or Registered Nurse, plus 4 years of related experience and 3 years’ experience as Oncology Technician I or 5 or more years’ experience in private practice or specialty practice.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to work with all kinds of animals. Working knowledge of oncology nursing care, chemotherapy administration and safety procedures, patient restraint, venipuncture, catheter placement, sedation, anesthesia monitoring, and supportive care techniques. Ability to communicate effectively with clinicians, students, staff, and clients regarding oncology treatment plans and patient care. Familiarity with hazardous drug handling procedures and oncology treatment protocols.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
