Position Function:
The Department of Kinesiology at Mississippi State University is seeking applications for a nine-month, non-tenure track faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Practice starting August 2026. Evaluation of applications is ongoing and will continue until the position is filled.
Salary Grade: UC
Please see Staff Compensation Structure for salary ranges.
Department Profile:
The department of Kinesiology is housed within the College of Education and has over 20 faculty serving approximately 1,100 graduate and undergraduate students. In August 2025, the department moved into a brand new, state-of-the-art facility with over 16,000 square feet of research space, classrooms, and offices.
Undergraduate students choose from among six concentrations: Sport Administration, Clinical Exercise Physiology, Neuromechanics, Physical Activity and Coaching, Physical Education and Coaching, and Strength and Conditioning. Master's students have four concentrations to choose from: Sport Administration, Sport Pedagogy, Disability Studies, and Exercise Physiology. Doctoral students choose between Sport Studies and Exercise Science.
For more than 15 years, the department of Kinesiology has consistently maintained an undergraduate population exceeding 1,000 students. Recent data indicate interest in the field will continue to grow. Over the past three academic years, the department has enrolled its largest freshman class on record, culminating in fall 2025 with 305 students, the highest to date. These trends reflect a strong and consistent student interest in Kinesiology at the undergraduate level. At present, the department has prioritized course access for Kinesiology majors, and as a result, the immediate impact on these students has been minimized. However, non-Kinesiology majors have often experienced limited access to courses because of their delayed ability to register and often have to take online courses because face-to-face options have reached capacity. This position will help the department more easily accommodate students in other programs whose degree pathways rely on Kinesiology courses, particularly those in pre-health, BSIS, nutrition, and related fields.
