Position Function:

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a residency position in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. The position is in the Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine and the Diagnostic Laboratory Services (DLS), which is part of the Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory System. This position is a 3-year residency training program that begins on July 1, 2027.

Salary Grade:  12

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This post-DVM training program fulfills the residency training requirements for candidates seeking eligibility to take the certifying examinations of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and is designed to prepare candidates for successful completion of those examinations. This residency is a three-year position that is renewable annually, subject to satisfactory performance. Residents work closely with 7 board-certified anatomic pathologists and 2 board-certified clinical pathologists. Training includes performing animal autopsies, reading surgical biopsies, teaching veterinary students in both didactic and clinical settings, and contributing case material to scholarly activities. The caseload is broad, with a notable proportion of domestic and farm animals. Diagnostic investigation is strongly supported, as are resident presentations and scientific publications. The program partners with the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, offering the potential to work with marine mammals if the candidate is interested. Two digital slide scanners are available for resident use: one at the Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory in Pearl, MS, and the other at the Diagnostic and Aquatic Lab in the College of Veterinary Medicine in Starkville, MS.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include holding a DVM degree from an AVMA-accredited or listed veterinary school and obtaining veterinary licensure in Mississippi. Licensure in Mississippi requires passing the NAVLE exam before graduation. Veterinary students or Veterinarians who did not attend an AVMA-accredited veterinary school must also complete either the PAVE (Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence) or the ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in client service. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care and support the education of veterinary and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

The job often involves walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands. It also requires standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
