The Geosystems Research Institute (GRI) at Mississippi State University seeks a highly motivated and self-driven research engineer who is experienced and highly capable in assisting subject matter experts in moving their code from less capable computing environments into a high-performance computing environment. The focus will initially be on models dealing with animal disease transmission. The research engineer will be expected to develop and present training material to small audiences and via online methods. They may be asked to participate in the preparation and writing of grant/contract applications and reports and may serve as (co) author on scientific research manuscripts.

Salary Grade:  16

Department Profile:

Geosystems Research Institute. At GRI we focus on remote sensing computational technologies, visualization techniques, agriculture and natural resource management, and the transition of these into operational agency research, planning, and decision-support programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist scientists and engineers in moving computational models to a high-performance
computing (HPC) environment
• Develop user guides and documentation to help users understand how to access and use
HPC resources
• Create training materials and conduct training sessions
• Infrequent presentation of project results to peers, program managers, and the public
• Support composition of conference and journal manuscripts
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Research Engineer II - B.S. in engineering or computer science; Two years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.

Research Engineer III - B.S. in engineering or computer science; Four years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.

Senior Research Engineer - B.S. in engineering or computer science; Six years or more years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in Computer Science, Computational Science, Computational Biology, or a closely
related field
• Experience in using big data tools and frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.)
• Experience in optimizing HPC workflows and developing scripts
• Demonstrated ability in developing training material and presentations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knows and effectively uses the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular
field of specialization.
2. Continues development of technical expertise and knowledge through experience and
application.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.

Routine deadlines, usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressure from persons other than immediate supervisor.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically, ability to distinguish colors.
