This is a 12-month, tenure track position consisting of a 100% research appointment. This position is located at the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS, and is administratively housed within the Coastal Research and Extension Center, with an academic home in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. The primary function of this position will be to develop an applied coastal engineering research program with interest and/or dual expertise in areas including, but not limited to, marine debris and litter mitigation,
coastal resiliency, natural resource protection and coastline erosion abatement, marine aquaculture and fisheries resource/habitat protection, sustainable coastal infrastructure
solutions, and/or coastal agroecology monitoring systems e.g., watersheds, marshes, estuarine health, and other coastal and marine issues addressed by engineered solutions that could be
described as Sustainable Design and Nature Integration, Nature-Inspired Engineering and/or Eco-Engineering Solutions. Candidates with degrees in agricultural and/or biosystems
engineering, ocean/coastal bioengineering, aquaculture/fisheries engineering, or similar or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Department Profile:

Coastal Research and Extension Center serves as the coastal arm of Mississippi State University's Extension and Applied Research Programs. This position is based in Biloxi, MS at the Coastal Research and Extension Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties will include the development of a nationally and internationally recognized research program applying relevant experience to assess the impacts of marine debris/litter and
develop solutions. This position will be based in Biloxi, MS, but may require occasional travel to other MSU and partner locations as needed. The successful candidate will work cooperatively with faculty and staff based in the Coastal Research and Extension Center as well as other MSU locations. The successful candidate will also be expected to work with relevant stakeholders to address needs and with extension personnel to disseminate results. Supervision of employees and/or graduate students will be expected. Faculty member will be expected to pursue and procure extramural funding in support of their research program. Research results will be communicated via stakeholder and end user meetings, MAFES bulletins, refereed journal articles, and other publications as appropriate. Service to relevant professional organizations and Mississippi State University is also expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in marine sciences (including engineering), biological sciences (including engineering), environmental sciences (including engineering), any of the engineering disciplines, or closely related field with a strong background in coastal and marine habitat restoration and resiliency. Acceptable candidates must have outstanding English verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate research results in a variety of publications; statistical, experimental design, and analysis expertise; ability to work independently or as part of a team; and experience with data collection in the preferred candidate’s specialized area of marine debris or litter. ABD candidates will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated success in pursuit of extramural funding, record of refereed journal publication, experience working with stakeholder and end-user groups. Ability to obtain a valid MS state driver’s and boating license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The individual should be self-motivated, fit well in a multidisciplinary team environment, and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to publish in the peer-reviewed literature.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
