The Michael W. Hall School of Mechanical Engineering in the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University invites applicants for a tenure-track/tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. For qualified candidates, this position can be associated with the Mechanical Engineering Innovation Design and Engineering Education Laboratory (IDEELab) in the area of energy producing and consuming technologies. Successful candidates will be expected to develop internationally recognized, externally funded, sustainable experimental and modeling (including data science) research programs in the area of energy production and use including, but not limited to, carbon capture from combustion products, gas separation technologies, and CO2 utilization and storage. Preferred candidates should show a track record in nationally recognized research and innovation toward transformative technologies, applications, and partnerships with industries.

Salary Grade:  UC

For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Department Profile:

Mississippi State University is an R1 institution with very high research activity. The Michael W. Hall School of Mechanical Engineering is one of eight academic departments in the Bagley College of Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering School’s faculty research expenditure is approximately $15.2M annually for 18 tenure/tenure-track faculty. The Mechanical Engineering School offers an ABET-accredited undergraduate program in mechanical engineering, as well as graduate studies leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The Mechanical Engineering School has over 1,000 undergraduate and 100 graduate students and has the largest student enrollment within the Bagley College of Engineering and 2nd/3rd largest within Mississippi State University. The School is also the largest ME department in the state of Mississippi.

Area of Specialization:

Energy production and use including, but not limited to, carbon capture from combustion products, gas separation technologies, and CO2 utilization and storage.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1.It is expected that the successful candidate will have the desire and ability to teach courses at the undergraduate level as well as courses at the graduate level related to the candidate's areas of research.
2.Pursue research support including submission of proposals and contact with private and public funding sponsors. Preferred candidates should show a track record in pursuing innovative technology creation research toward economically viable products and partnerships with industries and the NSF Technology Innovation Partnership (TIP) program.
3.The candidate is expected to recruit and mentor graduate students, preferably at the Ph.D. level.
4.The candidate is expected to have a strong collaboration with other departmental faculty, perform multidisciplinary research, and develop a funded research program.
5.Publish the results of personal and sponsored research in archival journals refereed by their peers. Preferred candidates should show an ability to protect and publish innovative products through patents, trademarks, copyrights, and other forms of intellectual property.
6.The preferred candidate should show an ability to submit proposals to the new NSF Technology Innovation Partnership (TIP) by composing industry consortium in their areas of expertise.
7.Serve as an active member of the technical community and participate in relevant professional and technical society activities.
8.Provide leadership and service for the Department, College, and University.
9.Pursue scholarly and professional activities that will keep the candidate at the leading edge of their field.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or a very closely aligned field. Candidates are expected to have demonstrated the ability to conduct research and technology implementations at the highest level and to have a record of, or the promise for, outstanding teaching and supervision of students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants with nationally or internationally recognized research programs in the energy sector, particularly in the area of carbon capture.
Candidates should demonstrate existing success in teaching, research, and service at a US academic institution, national or defense laboratory or private industry with relevant management experience.
Proven experience with commercialization of technologies developed at academic institutions, national or defense laboratory or private industry.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
