This is a joint appointment with African American Studies and the Department of Sociology. Tenure will reside in the Department of Sociology but half of the teaching responsibilities will be in African American Studies (teaching Introduction to African American Studies). We seek candidates whose research and teaching focuses on race and ethnicity with particular emphasis on African Americans
The Department of Sociology has more than 400 undergraduate majors and 40 sociology graduate students with strong ties to the Gender Studies Program, the Social Science Research Center, the National Strategic Planning & Analysis Research Center, and the Southern Rural Development Center. Programs offered include BA, BSW, MS, and a Ph.D. in Sociology. http://www.sociology.msstate.edu

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Scholarship: publish artides, monographs and books in the area of specialty.
  2. Scholarly Service: participate in professional meetings by giving papers, presiding at session, and serving as a discussant.
  3. Professional Engagement: promote the development of African American Studies and allied discipline locally and nationally by reviewing books for professional journals, serving on committees and boards of professional organizations, and serving as consultant for·local and national groups and agencies as the need or occasion arises.
  4. Teaching: provide instruction in undergraduate and graduate classes; serve on graduate examination; develop courses committees. Direct senior thesis as requested by students or director or department head.
  5. Advising: serve as undergraduate advisor and mentor to graduate students. Direct master's thesis and doctoral dissertations as appropriate.
  6. University Service: be available to serve African American Studies and the tenure department, as:well as the college on:various committees.
  7. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the University.
  8. Have a dear ·research agenda and demonstrate a vigorous commitment to research.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of the Ph.D. in Sociology by time of hire is required.

Present evidence of successful teaching and publication agenda in the subject area Is required. Mississippi State University is a Ph.D. granting Institution; therefore, an active record of scholarship is essential for promotion and tenure.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated evidence of a commitment to African American Studies and the ability to teach existing courses and develop new ones. Interdisciplinary training or experience by teaching or service in national organizations.
