To perform a variety of routine and specialized research/diagnostic duties in the field and laboratory requiring considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of applied sciences, laboratory techniques, and methods for obtaining research/diagnostic data. Employees perform work independently within established methods and procedures.

Salary Grade:  11

Department Profile:

Coastal Research and Extension Center (CREC) serves as Mississippi State University's "southern exposure" linking residents of the coastal region to the university. This position is based in Beaumont, MS.

Anticipated Appointment Date:

September 2023. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Prepare and apply chemicals to research plots
2. Participate in establishing and maintaining research plots
3. Calibrate, operate, and maintain farm machinery
4. Order and maintain farm supplies and materials.
5. Gather, compile, and summarize data. Set up tables and graphs and assist in statistical analysis.
6. May perform literature searches.
7. May use computer to maintain data and prepare reports.
8. Perform related duties as assigned

Supervision
Received: Supervision from a designated faculty member or scientist.
Given: Provide assistance to employees in routine sample collection or lab duties

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/experience:

Bachelors degree with major course work in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment.
-or-
Two years of post-secondary training in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment and two years of field and lab work experience including experimentation and research studies or closely related work experience.
-or-
High school education or equivalent plus four years of field and/or lab work experience.

Licensure: Must obtain a Certified Pesticide Applicators Certificate within 90 days of employment or complete the worker/handler training, whichever is applicable.

Preferred Qualifications:

Field and laboratory work experience beyond the minimum required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to prepare and apply chemicals to research plots.
Skill in establishing and maintaining research plots
Knowledge and ability to calibrate, operate, and maintain farm machinery
Ability to set up tables and graphs and assist in statistical analysis.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
