The Compliance Administrator I, II, III or Senior will serve as a member of a team of professionals employed to ensure that Mississippi State University maintains compliance with various federal regulations regarding university research. Specifically, the Compliance Administrator I, II, II, or Senior will assist in providing administrative oversight and support to any of the areas of human and animal research activities, financial conflicts of interest, biosafety, controlled substances, and responsible conduct of research. These positions report directly to the Research Compliance Officer, Assistant Director of Research Compliance & Security.

Salary Grade:  13

Department Profile:

The Office of Research Compliance and Security (ORC&S) strives to provide support and protection for MSU's research enterprise with the highest standards of security, compliance, and ethics utilizing outreach, education, and effective, fair, and consistent customer service. ORC&S is a unit of the Office of Research and Economic Development. This office provides support and training in the regulatory requirements for the conduct of scientific research for University faculty members, researchers, and students. ORC&S oversees programs in human research protections, animal care and use, financial conflict of interest, responsible conduct of research, biological safety, export-control, and national security.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

In coordination with other members of the Research Compliance team, the incumbent will implement policies and procedures related to IRB, IACUC, IBC, RCR, FCOI, and controlled substances.
• Educating members of the MSU community in order to establish and maintain a culture of compliance with Federal regulations and institutional policies relevant to the position;
• Reviewing compliance applications, facilitating revisions to submitted protocols, notifying principal investigators (PIs) of committee decisions, requesting additional information when required and coordinating supplementary materials required by the relevant compliance committee in a timely manner;
• Documenting meeting minutes and assisting with agenda and meeting preparation for compliance committee meetings;
• Assisting with activities to maintain the University's accreditation programs for human subjects (AAHRPP) and animal care and use (AAALAC);
• Assisting with post-approval monitoring of IRB, IACUC, and IBC protocols;
• Recommending changes to standard operating procedures to increase efficiency and effectiveness;
• Assisting with quality assurance activities by identifying deficiencies and recommending solutions and procedural changes;
• Providing guidance to researchers by interpreting applicable regulations (e.g.: OHRP, FDA, OLAW, USDA, FDA, and sponsoring agency);
• Ensuring that compliance records are maintained appropriately; and
• Interacting professionally with a wide variety of internal and external contacts such as Principal Investigators, Division and Department Heads, federal and state agency representatives, site visitors, and sponsors of research.
• Other activities related to the goals of the office may be assigned as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Compliance Administrator I:
B.S. degree in related field.
Experience: One (1) year of relevant experience.

Compliance Administrator II:
B.S. degree in related field.
Experience: Three (3) years of relevant experience.

Compliance Administrator III:
B.S. degree in related field.
Experience: Five (5) years of relevant experience.

Senior Compliance Administrator:
Master's degree and a Professional Certification related to Research Administration
(e.g., CIP, CPIA, CRA, etc.).
Experience: Five (5) year of relevant experience.

Substitution for Education: Two years of experience may be substituted for a master’s degree at the senior level.
Substitution for Experience: None.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the areas of Financial Conflict of Interest and/or Responsible Conduct of Research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experience with data management and word processing systems;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact professionally and effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts;
• Ability to establish priorities and react promptly to a large variety of requests and needs, sometimes in stressful situations;
• Ability to work independently and close attention to detail.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
• Frequent external imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
