The Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute is seeking to hire a full-time Agricultural Technician I to assist with field work and data collection. This position reports to the Project Manager and provides support and assistance to facilitate research activities and maintenance on field research projects.

Salary Grade:  10

Department Profile:

Located on the campus of Mississippi State University, the Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute administers and coordinates research and outreach programs dealing with water and related resources. It is one of the state institutes authorized by Section 104 of The Water Resources Research Act of 1984. Its activities are developed in close consultation and collaboration between the Institute and leading water resources officials within the state.

The program's purpose is to provide a coordinated research and development program that contributes to the solution of water and water-related land use problems in Mississippi, the region, and the nation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•Assist professors, staff and/or students with research projects. This can include but is not limited to planting, spraying, irrigating, and harvesting of corn, cotton, rice, and soybeans.
•It is expected that this position be fully involved with the implementation of on-farm research including the installation of soil moisture sensors, irrigation water monitoring tools, and irrigation water management devices.
•Applicants for this position must be self-motivated and have general knowledge of agricultural production systems. It is expected that applicants be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
•Job responsibilities vary throughout the year, therefore applicants must be able to adapt and learn quickly.
•Collaborate with other faculty and staff on relevant projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma

Experience (yrs.): Six months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified AND six months of general experience.

Licensures: Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in agricultural research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
•Have agronomic background in operation of various row crop machinery along with operational knowledge of irrigation management equipment and techniques.
•Be able to prioritize jobs, meet deadlines, and set and meet goals.
•Interpersonal skills to effectively deal with a wide range of collaborators, students, and university colleagues.
•Communication and organizational skills are required for success in this position.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

•Work is normally performed in extreme weather conditions.
•Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects at or above 50 pounds.
•Some travel required with limited extended stay.
