The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology, and Plant Pathology at Mississippi State University seeks to fill a 9 or 12 month (depending on candidate and duty location). tenure-track, assistant professor position in plant pathology, with a focus on fungal pathogens and diseases of Mississippi’s economically important agricultural and specialty crops, including turfgrass, sweet potato and vegetable crops. The position will be based at either the main campus in Starkville or the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona, as deemed most suitable to support the research program of the applicant.

Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.

Salary Grade:  UC

Department Profile:

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology pursues an academic research and service mission within the traditions of Land-Grant Universities. The Department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and currently advises approximately 500 undergraduate and 50 graduate students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a multidisciplinary, nationally/internationally-recognized, and extramurally-funded research program that uses both field and laboratory-based approaches to address applied research topics that synergize with existing departmental strengths in plant systems (www.biochemistry.msstate.edu/mission.php). Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, plant-pathogen interactions, plant pathogen-vector interactions, microbiomes in plant disease, spatial epidemiology, and plant disease management. Experience with molecular-based methods is highly desirable. Collaboration with other researchers and Extension Service colleagues both on- and off-campus is expected. The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, teaching foundation courses in plant pathology as well as advanced courses relevant to their area of expertise and serving on graduate student committees. The development of on-line courses is encouraged. Candidates with the ability to develop courses and reach student audiences outside the plant agricultural community would be highly considered. The successful candidate is expected to be an interactive member of the faculty as well as contribute to relevant scientific/professional societies.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in plant pathology or a related field is required with demonstrated scholarly productivity and excellence in written and oral communication. Exceptional ABD candidates may be considered, but preference will be given to applicants with post-doctoral experience. Candidates with teaching experience, evidence of multidisciplinary collaborations, experience integrating basic and applied research, a record of leadership and service, and the ability to secure extramural funding will be given priority.
