The Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute is seeking to hire a two-year postdoctoral associate in connection with a Natural Resources Conservation Service Conservation Innovation Grant. The project will investigate the impacts of innovative water and crop management practices on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and yield in paddy rice systems. The project will use chamber method and gas chromatography to quantify CO2, N2O, CH4 emissions from farmers’ fields in the US Mid-South. Organic carbon and available nitrogen trends and dynamics in plant biomass and soil will be quantified using standard chemical procedures. Grain yield and yield components will be measured using standard protocol for paddy rice. The project will also provide GHG emission datasets from various irrigation practices for drill seeded rice system.

Salary Grade:  UC

Department Profile:

Located on the campus of Mississippi State University, the Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute administers and coordinates research and outreach programs dealing with water and related resources. It is one of the state institutes authorized by Section 104 of The Water Resources Research Act of 1984. Its activities are developed in close consultation and collaboration between the Institute and leading water resources officials within the state.

The program's purpose is to provide a coordinated research and development program that contributes to the solution of water and water-related land use problems in Mississippi, the region, and the nation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct field measurements and analyses of GHG fluxes and grain yield components, analyze experimental data using advanced statistical procedures, systematically manage field and laboratory data, able to run and maintain a fully-automated gas chromatographic system, and scientific instruments for soil and plant ancillary metrics. Conduct measurements of yield components. Active member of an interdisciplinary scientific research group.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Agronomy, Soil Science, Molecular Biosciences, Ag and Biosystems Engineering, or other related field with substantial knowledge of rice production systems and working knowledge of GHG emissions. Exceptional written and verbal English communication skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Desire and demonstrated ability to publish in top-tier scientific journals.
Comprehensive understanding of statistical design and analysis.
Proven success in on-farm and small-plot research agronomic research.
