Department Profile:

In support of the mission of Mississippi State University, the MSU Police Department seeks to provide the highest quality of law enforcement services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors emphasizing education, environment, and enforcement as instruments to positively influence student development, healthy lifestyles, and safety within our community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs foot and vehicle patrols of campus to monitor behavior, buildings, and property and
communicates necessary campus safety information to the University Police Department.
2. Physically secure buildings as scheduled.
3. Opening and securing rooms and buildings at the request of authorized individuals.
4. Providing safety escorts as needed.
5. Patrols campus buildings and property to ensure the security of the facilities/areas.
6. Escort maintenance personnel to assigned inconspicuous areas for repairs after hours.
7. Maintain radio communication with other safety personnel and officers on campus.
8. Responds to activation of alarm systems including campus-wide electronic sensor alarm alerts.
9. Write and submit incident reports to assigned supervisor or law enforcement officer.
10. Other duties may include training additional security officers and as assisting with crowd
control and/or directing traffic during special events.
11. Perform other assigned work-related duties as required.
12. Ability to work in stressful situations and deescalate potential violent activity

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Education beyond minimum
2. Previous work experience
3. Certification in CPR/First Aid
4. Good physical condition

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to work within a team and foster professionalism in job assignment
2. Ability to work in stressful situations and deescalate potential violent activity
3. Demonstrated vigilance for safety and deterrence of criminal activity

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. Must be available to work rotating shifts (including nights & weekends), out-of-doors, and in a
variety of assignments including foot, vehicle, and bicycle patrol.
2. Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more
elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc.
3. Frequent-Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions
influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a
few days; travel or irregular hours often anticipated; meeting of deadlines and coordination of
unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions
involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
4. Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing,
handling objects with hands, and lifting, up to 50 pounds.
5. Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting more than
100 pounds.
6. Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically, ability to
distinguish colors.
