The facilities coordinator for the Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture (WFA) Department at Mississippi State University (MSU) is responsible for conducting daily checks on building operations, placing service calls if needed, and following up with service providers to close the loop on facility maintenance and equipment matters. This position will also independently work on facility maintenance projects as qualified to perform the work (depending on experience) and is responsible for conducting regular facilities and equipment inspections, identifying issues, and escalating as appropriate. The facilities coordinator is responsible for equipment property management and inventory, in collaboration with the assigned administrative personnel. Moreover, the individual will be responsible for assisting with activities and projects at the Deer research facility, Center for Aquaculture Technology and Innovation, National Training Academy for Wildlife Services, Avian Science Center, and Associated Wildlife and Fisheries facilities, as requested. This individual will also occasionally aid students and professors in the completion of research projects, as needed and requested.

Salary Grade:  14

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

In addition to the above specific duties, other activities will include (but not limited to) the following:

1. Assist with fish husbandry, seining & maintenance of equipment at Aquaculture Unit when needed.
2. Learn how to operate water quality testing equipment and how to respond to readings/data found during tests.
3. Assist with new plumbing projects and repair of plumbing related to aquaculture facility.
4. Maintains all vehicles and boats in good working order, including scheduling maintenance, repairs and keeping presentable.
5. Regularly assess the stock of buildings’ emergency and first aid supplies, implement safety programs as needed and ensure all university safety policies and procedures are followed.
6. Coordinates and maintains the security of the facility to ensure building and grounds are locked and secured.
7. Maintains, operates and supervises equipment/machinery as needed for specific tasks.
8. Maintains facility grounds to ensure facility is safe and presentable to the public for events.
9. Works on landscaping special projects, planting of trees, mulching, fencing, pollinator gardens, and back-up mowing if needed, etc.
10. Orders custodial supplies and communicates needs to custodial vendors.
11. Coordinates and facilitates the installation of facility enhancements and improvements; serves as project manager for any construction projects.
12. Supervises, assigns, and follows up on work duties assigned to Facility Operations Technicians, Student Workers, and Intermittent employees. Responsible for training new employees under direct leadership.
13. Purchasing and delivery of materials, supplies and equipment needed for operations.
14. Assists or leads minor construction projects, depending on experience.
15. Coordinate vendors for installation of office furniture, moving office furniture and minor repairs to offices or lab spaces.
16. Make recommendations and implement strategies to lower utility costs if applicable.
17. Work with administrative personnel for management of purchasing, record keeping, receipts, etc.
18. Keep track of facility inventory for annual audits.
19. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

H.S. Diploma/GED and 6 years’ experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelors of Science with 2 years experience preferred. Construction, plumbing, electrical, framing, welding or HVAC mechanical skills are a plus and highly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with these kinds of trade skills. Knowledge or experience with animal husbandry, landscaping, fisheries or aquaculture. BS preferred. Trade school certifications and training are also welcomed additions. Ability to weld.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Good communicator, both verbally and written, with strong managerial skills. Clear and timely communication on projects with the Department Head and Aquaculture Facilities Coordinator. May need to communicate with students, professors, administrators, and the public.

Ability to operate various farm/ lawn equipment or desire to learn and/or obtain required certifications (Tractors, trailers, trucks, backhoe, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaw, etc.)

Ability to lift 50-100 pounds on a regular basis, including feed sacks, equipment, furniture, heavy seining nets for fish, etc.

Ability to work nights, weekends, or overtime as it may be required.

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions (hot and cold).

Ability to work in water and heavy mud when seining fish; MUST be able to swim, at times water could be over someone’s head if they slip in the fish ponds.

Ability to operate general shop power tools. (Saws, drills, grinders, etc.)

Must be able to work alone and as part of a team.

Must possess or qualify to obtain a valid Driver’s License.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regular lifting of 50-100 lbs; exposure to extreme weather conditions (hot and cold); exposure to and work in water and mud; exposure to insects, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and other wildlife; exposure to machinery; exposure to agricultural/laboratory chemicals and other workplace hazards.
