Position Function:
The Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a three-year program. The primary objectives of our program are:
1. To provide advanced training and experience in the specialty of
small animal veterinary internal medicine
2. To provide an exposure to clinical research
3. To provide experience in the preparation of scientific articles for presentation and publication
4. To provide teaching experience in both formal lecture and laboratory situations,
5. To prepare for the ACVIM qualifying and certifying examinations.
These goals will be achieved by working closely with senior faculty, daily Medicine service case rounds, daily intern/resident rounds, weekly Medicine journal club, seminars and clinical presentations, board preparation, individual case responsibility, and providing the highest quality patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The MSU Animal Health Center's faculty includes board certified clinicians in internal medicine, surgery, neurology, anesthesia, radiology, dermatology, dentistry, theriogenology, and clinical pharmacology. The residency is directly supported by three experienced ACVIM Diplomates (Small Animal Internal Medicine), and an ABVP Diplomate/critical/st. Each resident spends approximately eight months of each year in a service unit typically consisting of a faculty member, an intern, and 3 final year veterinary students, with an emphasis on hands-on clinical training. Medicine service faculty members on duty make a point of being actively on the clinic floor, and of being heavily involved in case management, house officer supervision, and clinical decision-making. Residents provide emergency duty coverage on a rotational basis with the interns during the first year of their residency. Second and third year residents provide back-up emergency coverage on a rotational basis with senior Medicine faculty. Residents also provide consultations for referring veterinarians and other hospital services, guidance and support for interns, and emergency service for endoscopic and ultrasonographic procedures.
The residents will receive 14 days vacation yearly and will be allowed four months of professional development time each year. Professional development time may be used to pursue graduate studies, conduct research, prepare publications and presentations, study for specialty examinations, obtain training at other institutions and seek development of special interests in a subspecialty. A proportion of this development time may also be utilized to provide additional ultrasonographic support services to the small animal clinic. Residents are expected to concurrently enroll in a Masters of Veterinary Science program. Participation in investigative research projects is strongly encouraged, and the resident will be expected to submit, as first author, a scientific manuscript for publication in a refereed journal. In-house funds are available to support resident projects on a competitive basis. The program provides clinical, classroom, laboratory and continuing education teaching opportunities. Financial support is available for travel to at least one national meeting.
Continuation of the residency beyond the first and second years will be dependent upon successful completion of the previous year's requirements, and must be approved by a residency committee established at the commencement of the residency program. Upon successful completion of the program, a Residency Certificate will be awarded and the participant should be qualified to pursue a career in academic clinical medicine or in a specialty referral practice.
Minimum Qualifications:
DVM or its equivalent. Applicants must have completed a one-year rotating internship or equivalent postgraduate clinical experience.

Other desired qualifications include good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively are essential for working effectively and cooperatively with clients, faculty, staff, and students.
