The Corporal is responsible for performing law enforcement duties as directed by the Chief of Police. This position is distinguished from the Police Officer position by the additional responsibilities or duties and additional, acceptable job-related experience required. The Corporal position is established to provide the Department with a well-rounded officer committed to the goals and mission of the Department, and who has demonstrated the ability to work successfully with minimal supervision while providing peer assistance and mentoring. This position is expected to provide consistency and stability within the University Police Department by possessing a working knowledge of the Departmental operating procedures and philosophy, as well as progressive law enforcement techniques.

Specific to Investigations this position will provide follow up investigations including electronic/cybercrime on university owned or leased property. Duties will include initiating follow-up contacts with the victim/complainant of each case reported to MSUPD, identifying & locating witnesses, processing crime scenes, interviewing & interrogating witnesses & suspects, surveillance details, and case report management. Investigators may also assist with administrative investigations or threat assessment activities.

 

Salary Grade:  13

Department Profile:

MSU Police Dept. is charged with providing for the safety of all the students, faculty, staff, and guests who attend class, work, live, and visit our campus, and with the security of university buildings and property. The department provides a comprehensive array of law enforcement services through a dedicated staff of 36 sworn, state commissioned police officers and over 10 full-time support personnel. All MSU Police Officers are certified by the Mississippi Peace Officers Minimum Standards & Training Commission and have the same authorities and must meet the same expectations as law enforcement officers in any community. MSU Police Dept. is accredited by both CALEA and the MS Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serve as the assistant shift supervisor providing supervision and assuming the duties of the Sergeant in his/her absence.
2. Function as a Police Training Officer for post- academy and new employee field training. Provide other training as directed and complete documentation of such training.
3. Perform patrol duties including, but not limited to:
• Investigate violations of law or university rules.
• Concise and complete preparation of written reports.
• Recognize and enforce parking and traffic rules.
• Patrol and inspect buildings and facilities for safety or security concerns.
• Identify and document the need for special traffic, security, or safety concerns, and provide problem
solving strategies.
4. Enter shift data into the computer as directed.
5. Coordinate with the Sergeant for the provision of any special services.
6. Serve on departmental and university committees as required.
7. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Must be Mississippi Certified Law Enforcement Officer & Certified Field Training Officer

Minimum Experience:
3-5 years total experience as a police officer with at least one (1) current year at the Mississippi State University Police Department.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Education beyond the minimum. Experience working in an Investigations Unit at another law
enforcement agency in Mississippi or in a university setting. Understanding of Mississippi laws, proper handling/processing of evidence& property, experience writing warrants/affidavits, experience testifying in court regarding cases investigated, crime scene investigation training beyond the minimum, & experience interviewing & working with victims/complainants. Investigative training beyond the minimum. Ability to motivate & supervise subordinates. Good physical condition as evidenced by successful completion of a semi-annual physical fitness assessment. Demonstrated history of success working with other law enforcement agencies as evidenced by performance evaluations, references, and supervisor recommendations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Working knowledge of all components of the University Police Department & the University.
2. Proficient skills in computer and other technological applications currently used by patrol officers or investigators.
3. Ability to demonstrate exceptional officer safety practices and firearms competencies.
4. Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal communication.
5. Knowledge of proper investigation procedures of criminal incidents.
6. Knowledge of the proper and approved techniques of evidence collection and processing.
7. Knowledge of the application of various federal, state, and local laws, and other issues impacting law enforcement services.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Must be able to work out-of-doors, and in a variety of assignments including foot, vehicle, and bicycle patrol. Must be able to deal with stressful situations, including life-threatening incidents. May be subject to working on-call/call-back hours and additional overtime requirements based on the needs of the unit.
