The Division of Research and Economic Development, Senior Communications Manager, will lead and manage internal and external communications for the Division to strategically increase awareness and educate internal and external audiences MSU’s research and economic development capabilities and activities. As the Division’s Chief Communications Officer, this person will work closely with the ORED leadership and senior research leaders in centers and institutions across the university. This person will also coordinate closely with the MSU Office of Public Affairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work independently and collaboratively to provide daily operational oversight in the planning, coordination, and execution of ORED communications, activities, and events, including:
• Lead the Division in multi-media strategy to dissemination information to external and internal groups
• Serve as the Division point of contact with the University Office of Public Affairs and ensure ORED messaging is consistent with the University branding strategy
• Actively engage clientele and ensure the division is targeting communications to those needs.
• Develop and implement a Division-wide strategy of external communication that both shares the impact and capabilities of MSU’s research enterprise, and helps drive new sponsors and increases external funding.
• May supervise and coach support staff on effective ways to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders through creation, editing, and coordination of a broad range of communication materials including, traditional media coverage, social media posts, website content, e-newsletter, videos, printed publications, and promotional events,
• Develop and implement a staff media training program
• Responding to media inquiries and providing images, video, and other materials for broadcasting and online media.
• Utilizing analytics to report on the impact of implemented communication projects.
• Recommend and implement adjustments to communications strategies as needed.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Media, or related field

Experience: 5 years related to the duties and responsibilities of the role

Preferred Qualifications:

10+ years experience

Advanced degree, job related certifications, experience as a spokesperson for a large organization, strategic c-suite level experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Demonstrated ability to create an organization strategy, form teams of collaborators, and execute a comprehensive marketing/communication plan
• Strong written, oral, and visual communications skills
• Ability to consult and gather input from multiple subject matter experts
• Ability to design media for different audiences
• Knowledge and implementation of social media and web-based analytics for analysis
• Understanding of and ability to apply emerging AI tools
